Title: Correct engine paint color for '69 351W?
Post by: wsu0702 on February 16, 2017, 04:27:31 PM
There was some discussion about this on another forum recently and someone posted a link to this youtube video where it is claimed that "Ford Light Blue was still used extensively on small block cars through 1969" in the comments.  Is this correct?  I thought all ford engines from '66 up were painted Ford Corporate (dark) blue?

Also the 4 digit partial VINs stamped on the back of the engine and the transmission don't seem right to me.  Shouldn't they be 8 characters (last digit of model year, assy plant letter, sequential unit number)?

Originally Ford used Ford Corporate blue for 69 351's

But you will read in other threads that not all Ford Corporate are not all equal nor look like the original color applied

IF you do a search you will even find a single page ad that Ford put in many magazines explaining the change and reasoning

By 69 you will normally find the year, plant and the sequential number used. They didn't care about the body type and they knew what engine it was - the number was stamped on it ;)

All done by hand with individual letters so the application and tools were different from the ones used on the body. Uneven, some deep others struck lightly, upside down numbers - can be a collection of different details that affect what you see today

I remember reading the Ford magazine ad that you are referring to years ago but I searched for about 1/2 hour tonight and could not locate it.   Do you have any search tips or maybe a direct link?

On my '69 GT350 I matched some protected areas of original paint and here is what was a perfect match. Sherwin Williams             FORD M 2075 A . On the 2nd line of the label was J5-3701 00 Engine Blue  CC.Y. (I also had some put in a spray can for touch up).

FYI some different MFG paints will fade with a few heat cycles. I have seen touched up paint look fine when fresh but after a couple months of occasional driving heat cycles you could tell where the touch up was.

Bob, I have seen some fail pretty quick too but mine only has around 100 miles on it and so far even the overspray on the exhaust is still there.
