Hi all, I know this has been discussed before but I am not finding the answer to my current question. I have a Carter "X" screw type fuel pump with canister that is correct for my 64 1/2. However, I am looking to find a rebuild kit for it. I see a few vendors offer a Carter rebuild kit but it's application is for the high performance Boss 302, 428 CJ, etc.. Has anyone tried this kit on the canister style Carter "X" pump and it work? I'm not sure if the diaphragm is different or the diaphragm spring too tall, etc.?? Thanks!

I have heard of a number of others use that generic kit for the early pump and haven't heard of a issue because of it. I have not however had the occasion to need to rebuild one of the early pumps with that kit so as to give a play by play.

Thanks for the sound of confidence in using that kit Bob. I have a High performance Carter pump that the kit is intended for so if it doesn't work in my 64' I will try and salvage it for the newer pump I have. I will also post my findings in order to help others.. Stay tuned.

Just started to tear down my fuel pump for the rebuild this evening and was quite pleasantly surprised to find that the internals of this pump look brand-new. Perhaps this was a rebuilt pump to begin with? Maybe even an NOS unit? Either way the diaphragm and internals look mint with no cracks, tears, or any dry rot seen. I felt very confident to reassemble the pump and try it as is. I've heard some folks use a fuel stabilizer to help cut down on the effects of Ethanol in today's gases and prolong these diaphragm pumps? Any suggestions??

Just installed the cleaned up Carter "X" fuel pump this weekend. Works like a charm and looks much better than the aftermarket I replaced. Thanks for everyone's input.

Just as an added note/comment (this is the concours site ;) Next time you remove it you might want to use an off white/light beige colored gasket to the timing cover like originally done

Agreed, and I have read that here before. I was too anxious to get it installed but at least covered the light blue felpro gasket with gray sealer. ;) What is a good source for original style gaskets since Felpro gaskets are readily available everywhere? Not only the fuel pump gasket but also timing cover, water neck, etc...

Sometimes NOS ones are floating around if not some paint ones colored with other colors originally or just make them yourself from gasket material
