What would be the correct color for the hood hinges on my 1965 Mustang with a Feburary build date? Thanks, Ron

There are a number of tutorials on the site if you use the search feature ;)
Almost 300 related topics/threads.
Try "phosphate oil" Search out the how to threads you'll find instructions, suppliers for the chemicals, step by step - what worked and didn't work for others
Jim did a Phosphating 101 thread with allot of discussion and pictures of some of the steps and the results

Yes think you'll find the information I added after you responded to my earlier post more complete. Bob had an employee demonstrate how he does it years ago at a Judging Seminar Charles arranged at his shop

Thanks Jeff, but not sure I have the time for a do-it-youself phosphate project. Is there anyone reliable who applies this procedure to hood hinges for a fee? I'd be happy to pony up a reasonable amount to have it done right and save some time for 2,000 other things the Mustang needs. Lol. Thanks, Ron

I'm about to do my '65 Hood hinges... It's a Dearborn June '65 Car.
I'm assuming that they are supposed to be Grey Phosphate and oil finish.
When exactly did Ford paint the hood hinges black?? On 64 1/2 cars??

Black painted hinges were from the beginning of production until around October '64. Has been discussed several times here before.

So, Is it safe to assume after October '64, ALL Hood hinges from that point one were all Dark Phosphate and oil (Dark Greyish?) ??? or a Dark Phosphate and oil color that is Almost Black in color. I have also found some hood hinges over the years that have had almost a Natural Metal finish.... If you could shed some light on this confusion, That would be great Charles..

I think the most likely scenario for your confusion is that the shade of the plating can be effected by how long the hinges are processed in the phosphated bath . The longer left cooking in the bath the darker they will be and the shorter time the lighter the plating will be. The shade would vary depending on batch. A medium gray being the more typical IMO. The very light and the very dark are two extremes of the typical spectrum from my observations. Many service parts fall in that category from what I have seen. Others may have a different opinion.

IMHO that would not be a true statement as far as "almost black" Would guess you've been viewing allot of restored cars where the builder used zinc phosphate (produces a lighter gray) and have compared them to magnesium phosphate that when applied for a long time can take on a very dark color.
Plenty of service replacements and even originals that can be used to compare with a more typical finish. There are allot of variables (time, solution ....) as Bob mentions that affect the tone and tint of the finished product

Wouldn't suggest using the gun bluing to try and pass for phosphating on such a large part. These likely will not truly represent what they would look like in person but here is a shot at trying

Some pictures for color. The strut rods are the color-shade I like, and the picture was taken after they sat for a couple of years. The hinge was right after phosphate and oil. I like to use WD-40 spray as I flush out the pivot points until they run clear.

I do like Charles comment on the approximate switch over from black to phosphate for the early cars so will probably add that.

If any help in identifying an original "color" of an unrestored example, perhaps these images of a couple NOS 67-early 68 Service Replacements can help. I would say the coloring seen in the "flash" area would be closest to what to expect to see in natural lighting (images otherwise are a bit dark). The date on the box below the hinges look to be 1991, fwiw, these are from Bob P.'s collection, so most likely they have been in a climate controlled setting for much of their life.

Haven't seen NOS hood hinges packaged in a box like that. It might just be a box for something else that the hinges are on. Hinges usually just had a wired part number tag or later 1980/90's ones had the silver Ford stickers.

Makes good sense...I had to wonder since the Service Replacement (NOS) early style hinges for 67-70 were extinct by 1969 or something very early on.

I purchased Service Replacements from Ford in the early 80's, and received the C9ZZ ones in the attached pictures. As I remember, each came in its own box. Note too that they are painted. All of this makes sense since the true 1967 Service Parts (C7ZZ-16696/7-A) had a very short "life". The initial (as of January 1967) 1967 Service Parts were C3OZ-16796/7-C. These were not Replaced until August of 1967 when they became C7ZZ-16796/7-A's. Then, sometime between July of 1969 and July of 1970, the C7ZZ's were Replaced by the C9ZZ's. The C9ZZ's were available until at least 1990 (that is the newest OSI book that I have). Thus, it would be highly unlikely, if not impossible, to find C7ZZ hinges in a box dated 1991.
Sorry, I got "off track" with the talk about the '67 Hood Hinges, responding about them, and forgot to address the fact that this is in the "1964-1/2 to 1966" Section. The Hood Hinges for 1965 and 1966 were Part #'s C3OZ-16796/7-A. These were available under this Part # until sometime between 1981 and 1983, when they were Replaced by none other than the C9ZZ-16796/7-A ones ; yes, the same ones that replaced the C7ZZ ones some years earlier.

It's a shipping box. UPS, FedEx and the USPS don't like to ship items that move. Plus it protects the hinges from the shipper's "tender" care.
