Need photo showing detail inside HiPo distributor cap
« on: February 02, 2015, 02:14:12 AM »
When I bought this car 2 years ago the HiPo distributor had a Pertonix installed and all the dual point set up was AWOL.  Since then I sourced a MotorCraft dual point plate retrofit kit for single point distributors, and that looks pretty good. However, it's missing the connecting straps that goes between the point sets.

Can any one post a photo of what the connecting strap is supposed to look like ?  Or ever a detailed description would be a good starting place.

A recent post requesting help with distributor ID has a pretty good shot of a dual points set up (to include the connector strap). It's a dual point plate retrofitted into a single points housing but it may provide what you're looking for:

Is the connecting piece a copper strap or a wire ?

The strap in my distributor is copper with a plastic insulator covering the middle.

Yeah, I was remembering a strap, but wasn't certain.

I realize a wire is not a strap, however, would Anyone want to speculate if a 12 gauge copper wire solidly crimped to gold plated connectors would offer enough conductivity  ? ? ?

Here's a couple of fresh pictures of the strap.
The important numbers are:
- Material - hard copper.
- Strap - 3 3/8 in L, 5/16 in W, 0.018 in T.
- Holes - 3 in ctr-ctr, 0.300 x 0.150 in, round ends 0.075 in R.
- Insulation - 2 1/2 in L, 0.025 in Wall T.
Hole centers are approximate. If I was to reproduce this, I would use a thicker material, 0.025 in max, maybe soft copper, and use shrink tubing but shrunk in the middle only.
If you note the picture of the strap by itself, it may have been installed loosely at one end as it shows signs of arcing and the insulation is melted. It was part of the modified C5GF-12127-A distributor I got from e-bay.

Service replacements often came with a wire in place of the solid strap

Jim,

Thanks for the photos and the exact specifications of the strap. That was exactly what I was looking for.
