S code 390 engine I.D. codes
« on: March 02, 2015, 12:39:23 PM »
I'm having a bit of trouble determining the correct engine ID codes for a 69 S code (390) with the Auto transmission.
I believe the correct code is K385S which is what ECS and Mustangs unlimited sell.
Virginia classics and NPD sell a K385T for the auto trans. They all agree on the manual trans as a K384S
So is the A/T car a K385S or a K385T?

First question - sorry have to ask- Does your engine have the aluminum ID tag still attached to it?

Code would be stamped on it if it is.

Unfortunately it does not.  Truth is that's what I'm trying to find. I thought I could figure out the correct tag number by looking up the engine sticker numbers. That's when things got a bit confusing so here I am trying to find some answers. If push comes to shove I'll have Marti make a repo tag but I would much prefer an original.

Of course finding an original from the same time period will be a challenge.

Will look though some data and documents and see if I can provide that for you

Marti's tag book lists 384 for M/T, 385 for A/T. The "S" and "T" would be change level codes, and his book does not cover that level of detail.

His book is superb, by the way. Anyone who is restoring a Mustang should own at least two copies. One for the garage and one for the nightstand  8)

Thank you Jeff. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks WT8095. It appears the question now is when did the  S change to T?

'75 MPC section 60.6 lists a few PCV system differences before/after 2/21/69. No mention of change levels S or T. You could get a copy of the MPC and read it cover-to-cover to look for others...  :)  :)

Well ... good enough. Thanks for the help and suggestions.
I guess I'll start paying attention to revision codes and build dates on original tags and see if I can find a pattern.

Just as a comment - in some cases the S or T had to do with accessories attached to the engine rather than a revision ;)

AC - Non AC is one such example
