'67 Underhood courtesy lights
« on: September 09, 2015, 11:19:52 AM »
NOTE: This thread originally contained both under hood and trunk lights but after five pages became difficult to follow the two combined inner threads that developed. Because of this on Oct 22, 2023 and is here https://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=28998.0

I understand these were part of the "courtesy light group"  option.  My car came with that option, so I'm assuming the wiring is still there, in part at least.  I'm looking for a picture of these so I can try to locate some originals to install.

                                                                                                   Thanks...

Good LUCK finding parts & pieces to restore this option!  I've been hunting the under HOOD light for over a year and had ONLY ONE slip between my fingers. I have found a COUGAR version and Alloy Metal makes the closest reproduction Hood lamp.

On the Trunk lamp, West Coast Cougar sells a Cougar version that can be adapted to fit Mustangs but Cougars were built slightly different in the main tailight wiring area because the feed wire is wrapped into the Cougars taillight wiring. The trunk wire of a Cougar is slightly longer than a Coupe or convertible Mustang and much longer than the orginal Fastback wire on the trunklid lamp. I'f using a Cougar lamp, shortening the length of the trunk lamp wire will be required (wire connected to the lamp, not the wire feeding the lamp  or source wire). Then there is the lovely "clip" that hold the trunk wire to the trunk. ...and then also the trunk lid grommet, neither are known to be reproduced.

Welcome to my wild Goose Chase

Below are some pictures gleaned from Marty Rupps 67 Convertible, a few I took this weekend and a picture of the ellusive hood wiring clip. There are more pictures posted within other threads at this site. (the search feature is your friend). KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE SEVERAL RUNNING CHANGES IN REGARD TO THE CORRECT ARRANGEMENT OF THE HOOD TURN LIGHT WIRING (though I understand there to be only one arrangement for the hood courtesy light wiring). I believe there are more than 4 variations depending on your vehicles build information. Again, this information is discussed in other threads

There has also been a very thorough discussion on the trunk light wiring as well as a different thread on the hood lamp where you should find those other pictures.

Hope this helps some

A few pics of the front.  The wire runs from the starter relay along the passenger side, across the cross brace, then hops onto the hood, and up to the light.  This particular car had a melted wire.

Here are some better detailed pictures of correct mounting. Interestingly I was deducting for a incorrect hood light. Oh well.

I'll look again for mine...should be there since the light originally came with the car...but then again...PO did some strange things with the wiring.

I was under the impression that both the trunk and under hood courtesy light harnesses were not included in vehicles without those options.  However, my data set is small.  My contribution will be three vehicles:

1. 7R02C156xxx did not have the option, and does not have the wires.
2. 7T01C144xxx did not have the option, and does not have the wires.
3. 7F01C129xxx had the option, and had the wires.

Here are some pictures of the harness that I harvested from 7F01C129xxx

In the first picture, I have highlighted in red the separate, but parallel, wire for the trunk light.  It is literally a single wire, with protective sleeve, that runs the distance.

I brought some images of the trunk & hood light option taken from Jeff's recent post of a late build NJ 67 Unrestored, low mileage GT. They may "shed some light" ;)  onto a few more details...

... Also, another example of the metal clips used to secure the wiring to the right hand shock tower brace.

Richard, thanks for highlighting these points.  I didn't know about those underhood light wiring clips on the RH shock tower brace (my car has the courtesy light group too; however, no clips).   I'll look for them; maybe those clips are used elsewhere on Ford cars and/or reproduced and available somewhere?

Is yours a NJ 67?  Not saying they are different but can't at the moment confirm that they are the same. Or the same number or location ;)

Maybe Richard can ?

They appear to be the typical I have seen in Assembly manual and on restored cars but I thought there are typically only 2. I cannot recall ever seeing an unrestored car with this option, this being a first for me. Mine was toast when I bought the car way back in 78 and the remains, I took off and threw out so...

Here are some related under hood pictures from an unrestored (to put it mildly) early 67 Dearborn car, VIN 7F01C1291xx.

A lot of similarities considering (1) different years (doubled down with early 67/late 68) and (2) different assembly plants

John, if you have any pictures of the hood lamp clips, (off the car) the ones from the shock tower brace, that Coul be of help.

Here you go.  I was smart enough in this case to keep it, and happened across it a couple days ago...

modified to add picture that includes a critical dimension

Here are some with the same shape from the 69 Ford Fastener book.  I'll go get more dimensions so I can hopefully nail it down to the exact part, then I will check several MPCs to see where else the same part is used.
