Hipo GT shocks
« on: February 09, 2021, 11:47:43 PM »
Trying to locate correct front and rear shocks for my 11/08/65 SJ Hipo GT Fastback, 2nd. owner, 67k miles but previously have already been changed to air on rear and Autolite tanish on the front, any date code hints?

Likely looking for something from late summer but at this point finding a proper set minus the exact right date would be the first step.

I could entertain correct NOS, if I can afford them, used originals would be ok that I could have rebuilt that fall into time frame of build period. Original owner changed them out years ago, car has been dormant since summer of 1984 with broken cam.

You might contact Dan Patch the Shock Store Harley Chevrolet Parts that sells on Ebay . https://www.ebay.com/itm/MUSTANG-SHOCK-REBUILDING-BOSS-429-COBRA-Shelby-Mach-Rebuild/362992908567  . Also see- https://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-1967-1968-1969-1970-Shelby-Mustang-Shocks-Boss-429-302-66-67-68-69-70/362992908585  . He takes a comparable looking shaped shock to a Shelby,Boss etc.  and engraves them with the correct info so that they look factory . That makes it easy to get the proper date. He is expensive relative to what a aftermarket shock sells for .He is typically also 6-7 months out on doing shocks . He also rebuilds shocks or used to but his pricing may give you a comparison to making a informed decision on what to do.

IMHO those dates would be in the range of dates that possibly could have been installed on a Nov 65 San Jose Mustang

I am trying to determine the date code shocks i need and was wondering if the Hipo GT shock was special to these cars or were they same as other V-8 Mustangs. Also is there a list of plants referenced in the 66 library article decode for shocks? Phill has some nice ones and if I am going to the expense of finding some would plant code be a factor for my SJ car? Can date codes be changed? I am thinking as Jeff suggested an October/September date code that is what I need. I am still learning. I have looked at Bob's suggestion also and is a decision to make the correct choice or see if a closer date code shows up. I know donor cars are getting few and far between and I now realize that all the cars in junkyards in my life I have seen I should have bought and stored for these purposes, as a kid didn't realize the importance, just loved the cars!

No the date coding article focuses just about completely on the date. It does include some information on Ford stamping plants and maybe a couple outside companies but not on Gabriel.

In later years typical San Jose shocks can be identified by the difference in type of threads used on rear shocks and the MADE IN USA printed on the shock but this does not seem to apply to 65-66

A 5F date code would be a little early for my car? 11/08/65 SJ.
