Smog Pump Details - 1977 Cologne V6 2.8
« on: October 15, 2021, 11:32:49 PM »
Does anyone know what this pump should look like?  Numbers on the back cover?  Outlet on the back cover?  Straight nipple outlet on the back or bolted on elbow or ??

I have what I would consider a generic 1978 dated Ford smog pump but not sure this is what was used on these engines.  I have searched for photos but the low mount position makes it impossible to see pump details on an installed engine.

Thanks Jeff.  The engine bay pictures that I find by searching are no help because the pump is buried pretty deep.

I have one on my 74. The mounting is different from the other years. I don't have pictures handy.

Kevin

The typical Ford pump from this era has both the square threaded boss on the side of the housing and a threaded hole in the back plate.  Apparently, some used the square boss hole for the adjusting bracket and some used a typical sliding hole bracket (like an alternator) through the back plate hole.  Which does yours use and can you read a casting number off the back plate?  Also, does it have a bolted on elbow on the back plate or just a straight nipple to connect to the hose?

Know the mounting is different. The adjusting bracket is probably similar to Boss 302 or 250 6 cyl. with the bolt hole on the side. I have yet to find that bracket. Ummm. Maybe my car was missing some pieces and I'm putting it back together. I have a smog pump and I believe it has a bolted on elbow. The hoses were present. I just bought a 74 specific pulley. The bottom bracket is present and probably mounts the alternator like the 67 289 version.

I will need to take a look when I get back next week. The parts book drawings were helpful.
