PINION!

(1/1)

bryancobb:
Quick answer if possible please.

66 8" removable-carrier rear end...

1) How tightly does the pinion pilot end fit into the pinion pilot bearing?

2) I want to remove the pinion shaft, pinion retainer, and yoke...as an assembly.

I have the 5 retainer bolts out and the retainer has broken loose from the shim.

It looks like to me it should just bump out but tapping on the back end of the pinion shaft??

should come right out, but sometimes (most times) the o ring makes it a little tough. Instead of striking anything, try putting the parking brake on and twisting the yoke with a socket on the nut. Turning it should force the pinion out ot the ring (If the pinion retainer moves into the carrier, turn the flange the other way. I've rebuilt alot of 8 and 9" rears, and never had the pinion pilot bearing seize on the pinion. When they fail, they usually self destruct and fall apart, ruining the pinion, but the rear usually still comes right apart. Hope this helps, John

bryancobb:
THX John,
Didn't have the luxury of your twist-out trick!  Rear end was on horses and axles were out.

Pinion bearing was OK.  O-Ring was holding it.
