Rear Main Seal

(1/1)

ChrisV289:
Can the rear main seal be changed with the engine and transmission in the car?  If so, how and if not, what is the best way to approach it.  I've had a slight leak for awhile now but I feel it is getting worse.  It's a 65 with the 289 and automatic transmission...

it can be done with the engine in place but not the trans. i prefer to remove the engine and place it on a stand for easier access.

You might try LUCAS rear main sealer........we have used it with great success......sounds like you drive your car?? .....change the oil and filter and add the LUCAS product........might just save you for a while......

ChrisV289:
I tried that but it didn't seem to work to well.  It only gets driven on the weekend to shows.  Might just have to bite the bullet and change the seal w/ some friends.  I just don't trust any of the shops around here with the car.

Rear main seal can be changed with engine and trans in the car.If original type it is a rope seal.Could also have an aftermarket 2 piece plastic/rubber seal installed. Not a hard job at all.
