Smog pump rebuild and related questions
« on: April 02, 2010, 08:36:03 PM »
Have 2 OEM units (I think), appear to be '71 even thought they came with my 68's as casting numbers on covers are 116 and 170.  Both white fan.  Bought a new rebuilt unit and the casing and cover are a bit different, plus black fan.  Assuming the guts are the same and you can swap out the rotating assembly. Yes?

If so, how to remove and replace the fan? Steering wheel/PS pulley type remover/replacement tools (have both).  The rest seem pretty straightforward.

If not, does anyone sell a rebuild kit?  Bearing, vanes, or..????

Detail question, one has the "diffuser" type silencer.  Was this originally used on Mustangs ( early '68 390)?

Finally, have 2 different sized pulleys. C8AE-98480-A (4 3/4" dia) and -B (6" dia).  What are the application differences?

The moving parts (vanes and such) I believe are interchangeable but to remove all of the guts you have to break a pin and I'm uncertain how you would repair that. Last one I did I removed all but the cage (center rotation section) and soaked it a couple of dates in Enviro-Rust (s?) stuff then reassembled it. Getting all the vans and wipers can take time and allot of patience ;)

The fans become brittle so I normally just break them. With heat and age they tend to bond themselves to the center hub.

As mentioned above I've left the front hub attached to the "cage" and just worked through the rear of the case

Not that I'm aware of (rebuild kits), white fans are about $70 ea

Nope - don't believe so

That's going to take some time to research

Thanks Jeff.  After getting the fan off (that sucker ws on tight, sheared a 3/8-18 bolts threads right off....) see two plastic nibs on the case, looks like the "pins" you are referring to.

On the fans the smaller appears to be for a '68 390 w/o AC and the larger a '68 289/302 w AC and/or PS per my one reference I found.... can anyone confirm?  Also think it should be 9C480, one unclear double stamp and one very faint....

The larger B pulley is the BB with A/C pulley. Bob

I assume what you are giving is the engineering # which is what is stamped on the pulley? The A has multiple apps but in the case of your BB it is a Thermactor non AC pulley. Th B is the BB AC pulley.
