'70 Boss 302 Metuchen spring/hood latch finish
« on: May 16, 2011, 02:21:09 PM »
Are the hood springs and latch on a '70 Metuchen Boss 302 phosphate and oil? I know the shock tower caps are supposed to be black, correct?

Also, I have a very old bottle of phosphate mix from Palmetto. Does anyone have the correct mix amount available (I can't find my instructions).

Believe those were phosphate and oil also at Dearborn and NJ

Just got an email back from Scott @ Palmetto - His response

Manganese is 14 ounces to 128 ounces water,

Zinc is 4 ounces to 128 ounces water.

Jeff, what about this '69 Shelby (Dearborn) that got a SAAC Premier award? Its shock tower caps appear to be black?

You didn't ask about 69 or 70 Shelby's ;) Those, we expect to see painted semi-gloss black as most had a reinforcing washer added around each shock nut - welded to the upper shock bracket. Since the welding destroyed the phosphate finish they simply painted them black to cover the new weld and the rest of the now modified part. This was a practice started on the 65 Shelby's and continued (though some may have made it through the process with no washer added or being changed out at some point) through early Shelby production and is spelled out in the rules where written down
