1970 shelby deluxe door panel
« on: March 12, 2012, 09:40:23 AM »
did the 70 shelby retain the 69 version driver's side door panel (rectangular remote bezel) or was it changed to  use the round remote mirror bezel found in the 70 production deluxe interior cars.   my 70 gt500 has the 70 version  bezel  -  it  could have been swapped don't know.

The 70 Shelby was a retagged 69 model . With that said your interior pieces were most likely changed out for 70 versions. 69 door panels were not always available in reproduction form as they are today . Before the repros you had people who recovered them which was costly and time consuming. Because of availability 70 door glass and door panels were a common change out years ago. If it wasn't years ago then shame on whoever did it.  ;D

so the door panel should be a 69 with the rectangular remote mirror bezel.

Your car should have a 69 deluxe door panel and glue in windows, as Bob said the 70 Shelbys were carry over cars so they were 69, up graded to 70s, but the interior was not changed.  Glue in windows were often replaced with the later 70 bolt in windows, because people didn't like the glue in windows coming apart.
Currently working on a 68 GT500 #00563  Build date 13 Feb 68 NJ car.

Respectfully a lot could happen in 43 years. This was a common change .The factory change over was after Shelby production ceased. It would be easier If bolt in glass could be proven however the preponderance of evidence suggest otherwise.

i've seen ads for the bolt in conversion kits-  prior to  10/69  seems to be when bolt in was done at factory. correct?.  then it seems early 1970's had glue in too.    i won't change back!  you're right 43 yrs later--    my 70 gt had 3 owners prior to my acquisition so it certainly could have been done.  - i'll have to take a closer look at date codes on door glass.   now where did i put them?  car's on a rotisserie !

I would install all 70 glass in a 69 model as I have owned these cars for almost 35 years and the glue in glass is nothing but a problem. The doors and glass on 69-70 models are a big challenge in themselves to get everything to line up and not have air/water leaks, hard shutting and rattles. There is too many adjustments in these doors for my taste as it is, to introduce another problem like glue in regulators. I will gladly take the point deduction at a show for incorrect date code vs. all of the above. I have had some cars were the original glue in regulators are still in place bu that is extremely rare. My father who worked at a FORD dealer in those years said they came in on the transport truck with the glass falling out of them. This was a disaster for FORD from Go.

FYI It will most probably be more then "a" deduction if you are going the concours route as besides the date code you have the different seals to contend with also. But understand the point.  Fortunatly there are good products out there to cure the problem if you need to reglue the 69 glass or you can opt for the 70 glass conversion . To each there own :)

I am going the concours route and as long as points are considered for the proper fit an alignment of the doors & glass I will be OK with that. I look at a lot of concours cars that have the original glass in them and the doors shut very hard, the fit is poor and leaks all over. That may be the way they came new I don't know, I wasn't there. I do know my doors will fit and look good with no leaks and hardly think I would fit in the modified section or some driver class. As far as the seals of the doors are concerned, that only applies to coupes and convertibles due to the vertical molding as far as I know.  I don't know what the points deduction would be as I am not a EXPERT judge, although I have been working on 69-70 models exclusively since 1980. I don't have a title and don't want  or need one too know a good car.
I was at a national show in INDIANA a couple of years back and a group of judges were  judging a 69 cobra jet mach1 and they spent so much time looking at date codes, decals and correct spark plug wire boot colors, they missed the obvious things that were wrong with the car. Don't get me wrong these details will separate 2 very nice cars and that is fair if all things are considered but I think to many amateur judges are out there looking at these details because it's easy for a novice to bust someone on a date code as opposed to having solid overall knowledge of the model.

My 10/24/69 DEARBORN  car has bolt in glass. I don't know when the change was but I never seen a 70 model with glue in glass.
