Title: 69 Mustang Side Cowl Insulation
Post by: VikingNJ on May 02, 2017, 10:18:07 AM
To All,
I have seen in some photos over the years there appears to be insulation material that exists on side cowl panel above and behind side vent panels. However, I have not seen a insulation mounted only photos anywhere. I believe insulation was used on Mach 1, boss shelby and cougars models.  My car was only left with shreds of insulation left.
Thanks.
Nils

I just went thru my photo's of a all original 69 Shelby and there appears never to have the side cowl insulation like I have seen on earlier years.  And I don't recall it being used in 69/70.  None on the Boss 429 I have here also.   But I guess it may have had it at some point.

Ed,
So there was insulation on side cowl panels. I am curious what it looked like and how it looked installed prior to other stuff installed over it.

I have attached (i hope)a photo I recently saw of the heater assy with view from center of car towards right side and it appears to have insulation material like the dash insulation pad sandwiched between side cowl panel and dash assy.

Ed,
So there was insulation on side cowl panels. I am curious what it looked like and how it looked installed prior to other stuff installed over it.

Not really the same stuff or covering the same area as the stuff that was used on earlier cars. and since the vent was there only about 50% of the kick panel would have had it behind the panel. Instead some versions are much like trunk and under carpet underlayment and unlike the stuff used under the cowl from side to side. Other plants appear to have used a product similar to what was used on the body behind the sail panels

Will see if I have a pictures of one that is complete or another angle

Does appear that the material differed depending on where and when the car was assembled.  So can you provide that or we'll have a bunch of pictures that don't relate? ;)

The picture above showing a bit of insulation above the vent panel is of my car.  Taken through the glove box opening.  FWIW no insulation on the left side behind above the vent panel and behind the Parking Brake assembly.  Brian

Also therewas  a plastic lined insulation pad ( on 69 deluxe interior anyway) above the heaterbox glued to the bottom of cowl panel that always falls apart . Someone needs to repo  both these pads as they usually cant be saved& used over.

The trash bag liner with the hole pattern (bottom surface once installed) with the fiberglass insulation. Will look - thing I've got at least one picture where the stuff hasn't turned to dust yet :)

Here is a 69 San Jose example

Not sure if it would stay in one piece if someone tried to remove one

someone needs to make that part as every car would need one
