What is the best spray can paint available now for semi-gloss black? I don?t like the current version of Krylon 1613 at all. Too dull and ?soft? looking for me. I do like the looks of the current Eastwood chassis black, but it dries slower than 1980?s Rustoleum, plus it?s not available locally. Looking for something that is close to the right amount of gloss and doesn?t look like it came out of a spray can.
I?m sure this has been covered multiple times in the past, but this site isn?t the best resource to search for ?semi-gloss black? and get a manageable number of results!
Thanks,
Bobby

I too really enjoyed the old Krylon 1613. I recently bought some semi gloss at Napa Auto Parts that looked and dried the same way as the Krylon use to. I'm not in town now to look at the can to get the make and number of the product, but all Napa stores should carry it.

The Krylon is still available, it's just been named "krylon 1613 industrial". Google it.

I get it at my local Granger.

I have the new industrial 1613, it just doesn?t seem ?black? enough to me when compared to original parts. The valve cover breather cap in the photo was painted with the new 1613.

This is a really nice deeper satin black, easy to apply, multiple sources online:
https://www.spraymax.com/en-us/products/product/top-coats/1k-trim-paint/ (https://www.spraymax.com/en-us/products/product/top-coats/1k-trim-paint/)
You'll want the 3680102 number

Am I looking at in the wrong places (amazon) because it 17-18.00 seems to be the price range . Maybe that is typical.

It's called "market priced". There are other descriptive reasons.

It's a bit pricey. I usually buy it in a case of 6.

Everything else is going up so I guess our preferred spray paints are no exception.

I think the SEM semi-gloss also sprays a bit flat. Either in can or in bulk. It also damages easier than others.
I still like Rust-oleum semi gloss (aka Satin). If you spray it a bit lighter it's a bit duller.
Really slather it on and it gets shinier.
I hate their finger contoured spray buttons. They clog if the paint sits too long and since the can sprays upside down that won't clean it either. I've taken to blowing it out backwards with air and putting the spray button in thinner.

The spray-max stuff is nice as you can lay it down wet and it doesn't dry gloss. Very consistent results and easy to touch-up if needed.

It must have gone up after Bob looked as its $28 a can with free shipping, tax not included. Part# 3680102

Check ebay, saw a pack of 4 with free shipping around $14 ea.

I bought a can to try on amazon for 18.20 because I am already a Prime member and I get free shipping plus I get it quickly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3I2E0W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . If I like it I can get it at a much lower price if I buy 4-6 cans as Charles suggested.

Since products are always changing some of us invest a little from time to time to just buy 4-8 different rattle cans, spray them put on a section of metal (I've used a nailing plate often for mine) in one to two inch strips next to each other to compare to original finishes and choose from during a restoration since all of. the black finishes originally were not the same
Also I will test during the process to see which hold up to baking which I've done to make the finish hold up better IMHO over the long haul

I've also noticed that if I preheat or post heat a part -- less than 100 deg. F -- I can get a slightly different gloss level with the same paint brand. Too hot and the paint dries instantly.

I use Eastwood Extreme chassis black satin aerosol.
I either use black encapsulator or Chassis black primer.
I usually paint after 4 hours when the primer is dry.
Yes it takes 24-48 hrs until the paint is solid and doesn't scratch with a finger nail.

Sounds like allot of product on the finished part. Because if this it might not be the best choice for a restoration based on what your describing though it may fit your needs
Just an observation

Bringing this old thread back up since I finally got to try the 3680102 SprayMax that Charles recommended. This is what I was looking for, a deep black on the surface, a nice satin luster, and dries quickly. To my eye it has the factory appearance that I was looking for.

Just under $12.00 a can.
