To me it does appear the insulation I've got is the same material in the photo SgI66 posted of the f/b sold on BAT. Perhaps in the future there will be more info that comes out about what these pads are and/or where they came from.  I'm planning to reach out to the original owner I bought the car from to pick his brain about the pad.

Just wanted to tag on to this discussion after observing another example showing a fuel tank insulation pad.  We can see this pad under the trunk mat in the photos posted in unrestored '66 section with title, "Early 66 SJ A Code GT Convertible."

Here are some photos of the trunk insulation.  From this thread, it appears there have been very few to no examples of this found in other 65-66 cars yet.  I was planning to use this on my '66 HP t-bred, but I may hold this out until further discussion or evidence surfaces.  The car is so virgin original I don't see anything to suggest this car was not delivered with it.  Surely not home made.  Car has black standard interior.  Almost exactly 32.5" long, 24.5" wide and 1/2" thick.  If the trunk area became wet at all, this would have been the first thing to get tossed.  Perhaps why more have not showed up.

-Matt

I had the same underlying in my mostly unrestored 65 SJ fastback. I put it away as I was thinking it was put in later on. I am going to check if I still have it and will post some picture if I still have it

To add to this discussion. I bought my December 65 Dearborn built convertible in 1977. It had the same fuel tank top insulation as 21.4 posted, or very similar to it. In 2013 I bought my October 65 Metuchen built convertible from the second owner. It had the same or similar insulation.

Both of my convertibles have the standard interior. Neither car is equipped with anything special. They are just several of many that Ford cranked out thousands of: 289 2bbl, auto trans, radio, WSW tires, tinted windshield.

Might help if posters that have found an insulation layer below the trunk mate would include what interior (standard or deluxe) just in case we discover that is the key.
You can just go back to your post and add the info rather than adding another post  :)

Ran across 30 June '66 projected built SJ Conv std interior that sold on BAT in 2020.  Shows a photo of large section of brown insulation stuck on top of fuel tank. photo attached and link included to confirm plant and date from data plate.  https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-ford-mustang-206/

Here's a 1965 convertible on BaT as of today, 2/29/2024. It has seven photos of the insulation/sound deadener on top of the fuel tank. it is pretty beat up, may not be original, but it's old. Looks like the ones in my 1966 convertibles.

It looks like fairly good shape to me because it is all in one piece.Yes it looks original to me.

Another example of trunk insulation seen in photo T18 of the Early 66 SJ GT A code convertible -Unrestored
Picture threads.  In this example, car has deluxe interior.
