Title: Cougar Taillight restoration
Post by: Bossbill on June 15, 2021, 02:31:51 PM
This topic crosses between 67 Cougars and the Shelby cars that used the taillight assembly.

Here I'm talking specifically about the cast taillight part.

Any restoration tips or gotchas?

Ones I've done/used were always in good condition so don't have any specific hints.

I would think that the same "rules/guidelines" we associate with aluminum intakes and valve covers. Don't be aggressive during the cleaning process, don't add texture, especially in the the rear reflective surface. Maybe many of the suggestions as to cleaners and products that apply to intakes could be considered

The semi-gloss black around the outside of the housing is correct?

The PO LOVED semi-gloss black -- everywhere -- so just checking.

Hi Bill,

Based on the unrestored 67 tail light I have - you are correct.  Semi-gloss black on the exterior housing.  I've attached a picture of that tail light for your reference.

Thanks Ron.

I carefully removed the cork gasket, which I assume is stock, rather than use the reproduction gasket. I do wonder if you can see it at all.

You can't typically.

You're welcome Bill and +1 to Bob's comment about the gasket.

Hopefully this is about what the as-cast look should be.
I also cleaned up all the grunge in the reflectors and chrome painted them. I'll use LEDs to keep the heat down.
I'm getting ready to tape off the rims for final semi-gloss.

Be sure to scuff up the chrome so the paint will stick.

Ah. But I chrome painted it, not plated it.
And only in the bulb area. Took a lot of tape.
