68 9 inch rear end with 302

(1/2) > >>

Murf:
A lingering question about a 9 inch in a 68 without a big block.  Seems to me that all of the 68 302 "J" code cars are equipped with an 8 inch UNLESS the vehicle had the GT option.  If sold with the GT option then the vehicle is equipped with a 9 inch.
So is this 9 inch housing used with the "J" code GT cars exactly the same as those used in the 390 cars?  Are the brake lines the same?, the yoke the same?  Has anyone ever compared the "small block"  9 inch for 68 to the assembly used on 390 cars?  I assume that the driveshaft may be different for the 9 inch equipped small block cars compared to the 8 inch cars??  Just something to throw out and hope that maybe someone who reads this has  "been there, done that" and knows what is required to install a correct 9 inch axle assembly in a 68 "j" code car.   Any information or experience is welcome and appreciated!

Murf:
Does anyone agree with the 9 inch for the GT and an 8 inch for the non GT cars with a 302?

I knew of a '68 GT J code 4 speed that came with a 9". I thought it was because it was a 4 speed?

Many years ago it was taken out of a 68 GT 350 Shelby as I owned the car, New buyer
said he was putting some heavier gears in it so we took it out and  gave him another 9"
Not sure if it was original to that car but it is tight with no noises.

DTruitt:
My experience has been J-code GT's received the 9 inch.  Never have owned a non-GT J-code, but I have read they received the 8 inch.  So I will agree with your post.

I have owned 3 J-code GT's all have had the 9 inch.

I will have to look closer at my 390 VS. 302 9 inch to answer the other questions you ask.  I do know my 390 4spd. 9 inch is different from my 428 4 spd. housing.  Unfortunately my cousins J-code GT just left my house after 11 months so I no longer have that car to compare to.
