Title: What's a 1968 428CJ motor worth?
Post by: 13Outlaw on April 18, 2015, 11:39:30 AM
I've got an idea, but curious what you all think? I have a chance to buy a standard bore 428CJ, intake, completely professional head work all done paint an all, crank is with it most all accessories to include body an motor mounts. The block is true as the heads date on the block is 8L. Anyway let me know what you think. Thanks in advance!

An 8L dated engine is actually for a 69 model year car, but I'm sure you already know that.. It makes a difference cause an engine dated properly for a 681/2 CJ or KR Shelby is worth significantly more than one for a 69 model year car.

That said, a lot of it depends on how complete the engine is, what was done on the engine, and who did the work. Standard bore is good, but a lot of people don't trust "rebuilt" unless it's a known shop. Do you have some Pic's, or a list of what was done to the engine ?  Also what accessories are included can make a huge difference in price if they are correct and properly dated. (carb, fuel pump, distributer, bell housing, smog, ect)

I would say a long block, rebuilt properly with good parts would be worth $5K, then add up what all the included xtras are worth to you...

Now if the VIN stamped in the block matches your car...... That's a whole different story   :o

Hope this helps, John

John thanks actually helps a lot, it's a low mileage engine that is ready for stock Pistons however, I would have it checked out. The heads were completely worked and all the accessories go with it. But the smog parts aren't there the only thing missing is the smog. I have a complete 8L with 8M heads and intake for my R code Jan 69 car, so I have a date correct motor for my car (not vin matched I wish but date correct) anyway I can get it all for $3k...thanks for the input..

At 3K, as long as the block passes mag, it's a no brainer .......

Good luck on your purchase, John
