Title: Zinc Phosphating my 79 Hood Latch
Post by: 79mustangcobra on January 27, 2016, 09:25:37 AM
I bought this NOS hood catch. They are hard to find. As of 1-2016 there is one left out there on partsvoice.com for a 79.

In this post I showed how I used Evaporust to clean it.

I thought I was done, but I realized that it needs to be recoated.

I bought this kit from here.

I bought one pint.

You need the following items-

Stainless Steel Pot

Stainless Steel Tongs

Put water in the pot and heat up to 190 degrees.

Put your part in to clean off all of the Evaporust

Take it out after 10 minutes of cleaning.

Look it over. This thing is clean.

Wear rubber gloves and pour in two ounces of the Zinc Phisphate into the 190 degree water with the part out.

Put your part in and let it soak for 15 minutes, turning it every few minutes.  Be sure to not touch the part with bare hands after cleaning. The oil from your hands can prevent the Zinc Phosphate from sticking.

Once you are done take it out of the water, put in a box and spray it with WD-40. Dry off and repeat a couple of times.

This is what the finished part looks like with Zinc Phosphate.

I do this sort of thing outside either on a small electric burner or propane burner, depending on the volume of liquid, in order to prevent fumes inside the house.
