Title: Rear shock paint daubs
Post by: craig429 on July 06, 2010, 04:11:23 AM
What color paint daubs should the rear shocks be for a 67 Coupe, San Jose, built April 67, with a 289 auto, AC?

Checked about 10 build sheets I have from C codes I have beteen 203000 and 209000 which is probably around your VIN. Mine are all NJ cars but I don't think results are much different for SJ. All had red as the identifier (front shocks too) It made no difference on the shocks whether or not the cars had AC (4 with, 6 without)

Is the "red" identification mark used on a 302 as well?  Looking for shock ID info on an April 03, 68 SJ built "J" code with AC, VIN 155xxx.

Thank you very much.  I bought some Autolite shocks that came with red daubs, but the person I got them from said I need to check to see if red daubs are correct for my car.  I am getting the 67 ready for Bellevue show.

I'll see what I've got John, is it a GT or comp suspension?

Would agree that red was used on a 289 as long as it was not a GT - red was the base/bottom end of the shocks that year

Looks like brown daubs for that application

Can anyone supply a sample pic of shock paint daubs - I'm interested in the location and look.

Also, would the brown paint daub color be true also for front shocks on a 67 SJ GT 289?

Thanks, John

Here are some examples of typical shock markings

For your application the front and rear shock marks would be the same IMHO
