Title: What flywheel fits a 1985 Mustang GT
Post by: dolphiedog on August 01, 2010, 08:47:27 PM
Just purchased a T5 tranny and bell housing out of a 85 GT and i plan to put it in a 1970 mustang. The 70 stang has the large 164 tooth flywheel and bell housing . Can anyone tell me what size of flywheel fits on the 85 GT with a 5.0. Is it a 157 tooth or what?

I know the 1970 take as 28 OZ and the 85 takes a 50 OZ but i can get a 1970 flywheel in 157 teeth 28 OZ if that is what fits in the 1985 bell housing.

any help you can send me way would be great

I am not certain what the tooth count is between the two. I do know that either one should fit in the 85 bellhousing. Your biggest concern would be starter engagement relative to tooth count. You'll need a 28 oz. flywheel, so the 5.0L 85 flywheel is no good to you. So you'll need to look for a 351 flywheel with the proper tooth count for your application (they are also 28 oz. balance) if the flywheel you have now isn't any good or can't be used.
