Title: Rubber Grommets?
Post by: ChrisV289 on August 05, 2010, 04:44:26 PM
I believe the rubber grommets that go around the back up light wires and the fuel wire that fill the hole in the body are missing.  I am not completely sure if they are missing or not but if they are I need a plan to rplace them and I am not sure who sells them. I looked through the catalogs and didn't see them.  Any suggestions?

Chris

Believe they are the same size as the cowl side plugs.  Should be available in repro.

i may be confused here but are not those grommets part of the wiring harness as in molded to the harness??

Yeah the ones that are part of the harness for the lights....will try and see if they are there but it's kinda hot in the garage now....113 outside  :o

Geez, totally misread your post.  There will be a separate hole in the trunk turn down that a rubber grommet fits in, in addition to the smaller hole for the back-up light wiring.

If you had your trunk floor replaced, probably explains why the holes aren't there.

to my knowledge those grommets are not repod.

And what's worse is that the repro wiring harnesses have the wrong size grommets (much larger).

Yes, I ran into this with Scott Drake b/u lights for my '66.  I spoke with them about it and they said yes, we know that, it was a mistake, and when we run out of the incorrect ones we will fix it on the next run!!  Geez!  I actually hunted down a Drake dealer that had an earlier production on the shelf with the right size (smaller) grommet and bought those.

If you have an original set of back-up lights, the grommets can be cut off and transferred to the new ones.  Actually, if the whole original harness is in good condition, they can be removed at the socket and completely transferred!  I did this on the K convertible.

Going back to splitting the grommet... you will see a mold line somewhere on the grommet.  Use a razor blade to split along the line.  Then use a little glue and stick the piece back together.  The pressure of the hole will keep the grommet from coming apart also.
