Title: 67-69 Fold Down Seat Side Catch Screw?
Post by: Jaybart68 on September 15, 2018, 03:17:30 AM
Hi everybody, I have been searching all over and can’t seem to find any info on the 3rd screw that gross into the plate on the catch on the side of the fold down seat. I know the two screws that go on either side of the hole in the catch are the same as the rest of the molding screws. But the 3rd screw - the one that goes in the plate - eludes me. I’m guessing it is a flat #6 Phillips head with a #8 shank, maybe 1/2” long. Like this from AMK https://www.amkproducts.com/bulk3.asp?part=B%2D12065

Thanks for your help.

You are in one of the "nebulous" areas of Ford Mustang documentation. The 67 Mustang Body Assembly Manual does not show that piece because it was installed prior to the rear Fastback seat being installed. The 75 Ford Car Parts books (aka MPC) is where the "nebulous" comes in. The part is shown in a drawing in the Body Illustration Section 610, page 13 as 601A68 which come back in the Body Section 600 page 2 as Ford part number C7ZZ-63601A68-A, "Plate, Rear Seat Back Catch Striker". The drawing shows only a single screw, 52352-S (U-293) for installation (that's typical). The Body Section does have more attaching installation, 2 each 52352-S8 for each side, plus the one you want - 53100-S8, 8-15X1/2 Oval Head, Phillips drive, 1 each per side, no other information given. Now for the good part - Ford did not service that screw, it's shown as obsolete. We are now exactly where the reason that your post was written.
I do not have a 67 Fastback available to remove that screw to verify its dimensions or its peculiarities, for example - head diameter and tip type.
In the interim, I would use another 52352-S8 screw in place of 53100-S8 - same threads, head type (diameter?) and length. I base this one factor - wherever this was assembled, they would prefer to have on less item to buy, inventory and install.
In the Body Section 600 page 2, this part, C7ZZ-63601A68-A, is shown with a quantity of 1. As there are two latches, the quantity should be 2.
Per Body Section 600 page 2, the above applies to 67-71 Mustang Fastbacks with folding seats.

Attached is some 1968 MPC information that confirms what Jim found.

I have my original seat set aside, not quite ready to install.  I'll try to get to it today and see if there is additional information that might help.

Note the quantity of 1 for the striker. There's one on each side.

This is what was on mine.  The machine screw is #8-32

Thanks for the replies. I a had one of the machine screws in mine as well, with the other side missing. I assumed someone messed with it before and put the machine screw there incorrectly. Looks from John’s picture like it is the correct screw there. My car is a Dec 22, 1966 Dearborn car.

So now the hunt - any ideas where I can locate one of these? AMK seems a strikeout.

I found a zinc plated one at Fastenal.  You would need to double check dimensions

I found one match in the AMK "Guide to Ford Fasteners" - pg 44, 50398-Sxx, 8-32X1/2Oval 5/16, Philips, but it is not stocked by AMK. However, in the 2014 AMK catalog, pg 120, Ford p/n 381571-S, AMK p/n B-12594, is a 8-32X5/8Oval 5/16, Philips, which is used on 67, and on, door and window handles. (Now, where did I put my Dremel cut-off wheel?)

Per Body Section 600 page 2, the above applies to 67-71 Mustang Fastbacks with folding seats.
The 71 (and 72) Mustang fold down seats are documented in another section (different design), so that application listed above is incorrect - should be 67-70. (Unless there is an early and late style.)

The design for what were referring to as the "catch" changed at some point in 70 production and was a black frame shaped differently. Screws I've found used so far are different than the earlier chrome over metal versions

Do have other examples with a chrome "catch" that wraps around the top edge (so different version of the side stainless also) of the side stainless trim to the "top edge" when fold down is in its down position. Still  chasing down more details  ::)

I think I’m going to go with this from AMK https://www.amkproducts.com/bulk3.asp?part=B%2D13897

Described as “8-32 X 1/2 PH OV F CUTTER #6 HD, CHROME”

I checked the ones on fastenal and their head is definitely too big.

And checking visually - the picture from AMK vs. the one screw I have - looks very much the same sans the cutter feature.

For those interested here the comparison between the screw pulled from the car and B13897 from AMK. I’m very happy with that.
