Title: 69 NJ Radiator support rubber seal question
Post by: Coupey on March 07, 2010, 03:58:15 PM
My friend has a 69 Mach 1 SCJ 4sd.It is an april 69 NJ built car.His Rad support has staple holes in between the hood pins. The question is we have looked at so many cars and they are all different. From your experiences how wide should his seal be.Should it be wider than the hood pins or just in between. If it should be wider is it held on with the clips at the ends and does it get held down by the hood pin?Any help is appreciated.

The whole radiator seal thing has been a discussion on a number of sites through the years so I guess it is logical it would pop up here also ;)

So we're guessing your car is in the late 180,000 to early 190,000 range and of course NJ cars always seem to odd patterns of practices.

All we can go on IMHO are the remaining unrestored cars we have access to and draw out conclusion from those.

Most appear to have been retained with staples but we do have a peppering of originals retained by screws.

All of the ones with staples I found stop short of the hood pins

The ones with screws appear to travel the full length of the radiator support

Here the pin looks like it was mounted below and passed through a hole cut in the seal

I have an early April NJ built Mach 1 that I removed the original seal from and it fits between the hood pins and was attached with staples.  I just cleaned it up and reinstalled it.

Just adding a link to this subject focusing on the attachment screws. May merge both threads together at a later date
