Master Cylinder Cap
« on: June 03, 2010, 06:08:36 PM »
What would be the correct kind of cap for a San Jose car built 10/1964.  Standard brakes...I have two caps in my garage, one is like a copperish color (not zinc or cad) and the other is chrome...I can take a picture of the copper one if needed.  It also has a small pin hole towards the back of the cap.

Was most likely this style:

So would this be the correct cap for the car?  And would I need to paint it black?  There is a tiny hole towards the top if you can see it.  Should that be there as well?

Yes, that looks like the right one.  Would need to be painted the same black as the master cylinder.

Charles, what kind of black would you suggest?  Also what's the purpose of the hole?

ANy semi-gloss black will do the trick

Also what's the purpose of the hole?

It allowed air to flow (all master cyl caps have a vent feature over the gasket during this era) under the cap and over the gasket to fill the void left as the gasket (bellow) to expand if the brake fluid is reduced or lost in the system
