67-68 Fastback Trap Door Discussion

The subject came up in a thread related to how the thin upper trim was originally attached on 67 and 68 fastback trap doors.

So far we've identified two versions as far as how the upper edge trim was attached.

#1 With clips that attach to the back side of the trim leaving the face/interior side with no visible retainers (Ex 7R02S1288xx)

#2 With this version the trim is attached with three short Phillips head chrome screws and the heads are visible from the interior of the car. (Ex 8R02J106xxx)




The MPC lists two doors -- one for 67 and then a changeover to the screw-in style in Feb 68 if I remember right (details on another computer inside).

Here is a 67 trap door along with the trim that fits in the large holes.

Text removed thatrelated to other thread ........................ but wanted to share that the earliest San Jose example I have is a Sept 67 (projected date) built car that had the screws originally - 8R02J1045xx. Could have been built later as I have other Sept projected cars being built in November 67

Do have pictures of  8R02S100008 and though it isn't a great picture sure looks like it has a screw in the center of the trim piece but it is a restored car.

Red interior (lower of the two) color fastback I posted (edit) in the other thread is a Dec 1 built San Jose example

So far don't have any San Jose examples without the screws

Yes that is correct Bill. Our 12-02-67 68 GT 350 has the clips not screws. The 68 AMK interior kit provided the clips. But I would have to say they were very unsatisfactory.
Ford probably fond that the three screws cost less than the clips and made the change.

I guess the question here as always is when was the original poster's car built?

I dug through the 60-68 MPC and that doesn't help. I referenced 68 -- it should have been 67.
Since these things are not part numbered I'd be curious to see the three styles referenced.

I guess the question here as always is when was the original poster's car built?

June 68 San Jose. Since I've not been able to find any 68 San Jose built examples yet with the clip style - this may be a difference between plants and in turn suppliers

I've been keeping you pictures and responses focused on late 68 San Jose to reduce the possibility of different plants patterns

That reference is for the door itself not the trim and the change relates to the non-fold down door. Can't recall if the change was the upper trim finish on the non-fold down or the lower lip. Will have to look at that also don't believe the change was discussed over in the thread about the non-fold down rear doors.

Bill, the "Moulding - Luggage Compartment Front Access Door Trim" is part numbered as 45770.  The 67 one year only and 60-68 both list the same part number; C7ZZ-6345770-A.  The part appears to have been omitted from the 65-72 MPC.

However, the 67 does not list any retainer, but 68 does, as C7ZZ-6542527-A.  That is the only difference that I see.

Does the inclusion of the retainer in the October 1967 MPC mean that the trim piece did not have holes at this time?  Does a quantity of 9 retainers make sense?

I'm really surprised that design change was allowed to move forward without a part number revision.

What I meant and should have said is the door itself has no stamped part number on the two 67 examples I dug out.

Only markings I've seen (typical of most sheet metal parts)  is a stamping date on the fold down (two piece) trap doors making identification (as far as exact application) more difficult. Guess that is one of the reasons we're discussing it :)

Just to bring this subject back up to the top since it came up in a question today and looking through my collection it was easy to determine that that any change did not take place when the MPC quoted states so will be collecting some examples and VINs and sharing those findings in hopes of a better understanding of the possible running changes. And if we determine for certain (yes its surely looking that way) I'll be moving this to the 68 section and adjusting the title if need by
