Neatness of VIN stamping on 65 Dearborn K Code Engine Block
« on: October 25, 2018, 08:10:09 PM »
I am looking at a 1965 Mustang that is believed to have a K Code engine. The block is stamped in the correct place but the characters look like a 2nd grader stamped them as they are all helter-skelter. None appear straight up and down but are either rotated to the left or leaning to the right. The stamping is consistently light though and difficult to read. It looks like the VIN starts 5F. I have very limited personal observation of K Code blocks, but they have all been neatly hand stamped. Has anyone seen VINs stamped all messy like this?

The "look" and practices seem to differ depending on engine, year and plant. For 65 Dearborn examples I normally have seen were sort of straight when compared to other items I mentioned before.  Looks like typically they were not as neat as San Jose for example during the same time period.

Some of the things your seeing may be due to access or where that worker was forced to do the stamping at. The worker may have had to drape themselves over the engine and hold the stamp upside down while striking it with the hammer

Here is a picture of the engine stamping, it does look at a lot like the VIN stamp in pictures posted in reply #4 and #5.

Yep, nothing to be concerned about.  With a good cleaning, numbers should show up better.
