Correct Antenna for 1967 - 68

The 1967 - 68 Cougar uses the identical same antenna as Mustang for those years, however the service part has a different part number. The reason is simple; the Cougar template for the dealer to drill the hole in the fender is not the same as Mustang.

Every time I do this I feel like I am doing it for the last time. How will I ever find another antenna if I restore another car some day?

This antenna came to me as part of a complete 1968 Cougar AM radio installation kit. My car has the original factory AM stereo tape player, so the radio was not needed. These antennas are easy to spot compared to the cheesy reproductions. The mast doesn't rattle like the repops. And the ball on top is chrome rather than stainless. Finally, the inner base has the little copper ground tang that is missing on the repops.

And the ball goes almost all the way down to the next mast section.
The repops are inches from touching.

Real easy to spot the correct one across a sea of Mustangs/Cougars.

I always go directly to the car with the correct antenna since if they got this right ...

The mast in the picture if it is seated all the way down but does not go down to the second section then it is for a 65/66. The ones for a 67 /68 will rest flush with the second mast section. At least from the assembly line. There are many vintage pictures in the public domain to verify these observations . The ground plane section (with the copper tab) will typically have a C5 engineering number on the 65/66 antenna kits and a C7 number on the 67/68 kits.

The mast in the picture if it is seated all the way down but does not go down to the second section then it is for a 65/66. The ones for a 67 /68 will rest flush with the second mast section. There are many service parts that are made years after the model they are meant for was produced. It maybe was a manufacture kit done in 1968 however it still remains that the style is for 65/66 . It will work on 65-68 however it is only assemblyline correct for 65/66 . Apparently both styles were produced during the same later time period. The 65/66 style is the most common one seen in service inventory it seems. What engineering number was on the ground plane? I have most frequently seen the C5 engineering number with this style mast . The C7 engineering number is typically on the later style 67/68 mast. Not always but typically.

You may want to review my post because not knowing for sure if your antenna was pushed down all the way I said -"The mast in the picture "if" it is seated all the way down but does not go down to the second section then it is for a 65/66."  To rephrase in the hopes of making it as clear as possible,  IF the top section is pushed all the way down yet sticks up some it is the 65/66 style.  IF the top section is pushed all the way down and does not stick up but sets flush against the next section then it is the 67/68 style. I just wanted to confirm you are aware of the correct one for 67/68 style since the picture you posted seemed to indicate otherwise.
