22F Battery, what's a fair price and is it a December 1970?
« on: February 22, 2021, 05:09:28 PM »
I have a chance at buying this but I see it isn't exactly ideal for Concours but what does the crew make of it's value? I have an opportunity to buy it but it's a bit steep.

Date is usually on the bottom.  It's a later service replacement piece, technically not correct for 65-67.

Obviously a 68-up stye battery so it will be as out of place in a 67 as the repro battery. I have seen nice shape 68-up dead batteries sell for 600.00-2000.00. There is a much smaller market for that 22 68-up style given they were not used in many high profile applications.

Main target market might be the Boss 302 one if you or the next buyer ignores the date code.

If we knew when the battery was made then you might be able to figure out if this is a warranty replacement (later date for that reason) or an original out of  a 1971 car

For example the 70 Boss 302 shared the same battery as many (was the standard) 302 2V non-AC Mustangs. Buildsheet codes match the "AA" coding on the warranty tag

Some 69 Boss 302's also used that AA as well as others

Can't help with the value

The difference is that your battery is a service replacement as indicated by the punch out date sticker which is to indicate when it was to be put into service. The other has a assemblyline type sticker. ECS reproduces the assemblyine stickers to make your 68 service battery look like assemblyline.

Would the " 68 " and the dots around it be read as other dates with dots,  4-68 ?

The 22hf battery in richards first post looks like a 71 model year assembly line battery to me by looking at the dec 11 1970 melted in top date.  The bottom date moulded in the circle was when the bottom case was made and the melted in top lid case date is when the battery was completed and assembled then it probly ended up in a january  1971 small block car i would think.  Its a rare battery indeed.

Its interesting the 68 battery has a trademarking after the Autolite where the 70 battery does not.

Like other aspects the batteries evolved as time went by. Notice the difference in the battery caps also.

I agree and already understood that it would be out of place in any 67. The attraction was that 22F's are virtually unavailable in nearly ANY original vintage or vintage reproduction form, let alone being available in what appears to be assemblyline form (as I initially suspected this one was and now it seems confirmed).
Interestingly though, this example is obviously NOT a Ford Service part, it is also completely DRY inside. The sellers claim is that the old fella he got it from said that it never  had been filled (how could THAT be is the obvious point of curiosity).

In any event, I did end up buying it. The idea was to offer it up for sale in the Concours arena. Look for the ad in the For Sale section.

I know what I have, no lowballers please ;)

Yes, agreed, if it has the melted in stamping on the top, that should indicate that it was installed on the assembly line (sorry for missing that earlier).  If it was an assembly line piece, then the car had to drive off at the end...

Maybe flushed out after it went bad?
