1966 NOS or original OEM Mustang radio speaker
« on: March 16, 2021, 04:07:57 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone have a spare radio OEM Ford radio speaker for a 1966 Mustang??? NOS would be better but since I have a project going on under the dash [changing out heater core...ugh], I thought it would be nice to tackle this task. The radio is original but the speaker is a repop. Does not have to be perfect but must work! Preferably with a C4 to C6 code.

Thanks again,

Steve

The speaker you want has a 64 part number, C4ZA-18808-A, no 65 or 66 number. There is no direct service replacement, but there is a "generic" Ford service stock number, C4AZ-18808-E, 4 X 10 inch.

Also was just looking at how to remove and install [in the event I ever find one] but do you remove the grill on the dash or pull the radio and go that route. The one currently installed appears to have been mounted from the top by I believe removing the grill on the dash.

Thanks for any guidance.

If you find an original but the cone is broken you can send it in and have it re-coned.
I finally had to do this in order to have an "original Ford."

Back in my youth (and many days with little cash), we would repair speaker cones with glue and toilet paper.
- but there is a "generic" Ford service stock number, C4AZ-18808-E, 4 X 10 inch.
Which in turn has been replaced by C9AZ-18808-D,
Also was just looking at how to remove and install [in the event I ever find one] but do you remove the grill on the dash or pull the radio and go that route. The one currently installed appears to have been mounted from the top by I believe removing the grill on the dash.
That's the standard way.
I would recommend you get a set of 66 Mustang Assembly Manuals, and the 64-65 Mustang Chassis Manual, as 90-95 percent of the contents would also apply to Shelbys. There is a booklet "1966 Shelby, Unique Parts Manual" that is also beneficial.

Thanks all. I shall continue my quest! I do have the Shop Manual but not the assembly manuals...great idea. I live 10 minutes from NPD and they are open every day so I shall head down there today for that. By the way, where can you have a speaker re-coned???

All the best and stay safe!

Phill,
For the record, what is the actual part number on the speaker in the box, and any date codes?
(You can justify opening the box to inspect for "speaker rot", "frame corrosion" and "worms".)

I find no reference to base number "18971". Where did this number appear?

There's  a 67 rear seat speaker that has the number 18971. See pic from MPC.
It appears speakers can have different numbers than the 18808 listing.
