Did all the CJ C6's come with the "R" servo?

Have you ever seen one that had a "D" code on it?

IF it has a "D" servo it's not original. More importantly is the case correct? Does it have a VIN stamp that matches the car?

The servo can be changed and a "D" servo will fit in an "R" case but not vice - versa because an "R" case has a bigger hole machined for the servo.

Other internal parts are different in a real "R" transmission (PGB-AF) such as the high clutch drum because it contains one more clutch and one more steel than any other C6 except the PGB-W. The valve body is different too.

Here's a real one:

1968 R code 428CJ Cougar XR-7 May 13 Dearborn C6 / 3.91 T - Lock

That is my concern, the transmission is still in the vehicle and need to at least drop it to see if the vin is on the transmission. All the other numbers seem to fall in line but as Bob has stated in previous topics if the transmission has ever been rebuilt they could have just thrown another case in it off the shelf rather than rebuild the correct one... BTW the tag is mussing also at the servo and that s what made me start looking. I just didn't know if there were different situations that used a different servo. My car is a 3.00 open differential and A/C so doesn't have a lot of get up and go.

If it's a 428 CJ or SCJ the only possibility is a PGB-AF or one of the variants -AF1, -AF2 etc. All of them came with a cast iron tail shaft, R servo and extra severe duty clutch pack and the special valve body.

Particularly as years went by the big retail transmission shops would not have the proper rebuild kits to rebuild a real CJ transmission so inevitably they would substitute things to get by. No telling what you have until you know. Pull the servo cover and take a picture, it will tell you if the case has been swapped.

The "D" servo was third from largest, it was typically found behind 390-2V applications. Not a good sign for you.

The machining inside the servo cavity is only big enough to fit the "D" servo. So it's not the right case for a 428CJ. It's from a 360 / 390 application of some sort.

so now i ma more confused I pulled out the D servo, did you mean not big enough for the R servo? It has the cast iron tail shaft, and all the casting numbers, What would be the best way to determine if I buy a 69 CJ transmission? Is it only based on the R servo?

Right - see the big step in your picture with the piston removed? The case could be machined to accept an R servo I am sure. It's a job that would require a very talented machinist and the case totally stripped and out of the car.

Are you talking about the lip inside the case assembly?
