289/4 speed speedometer cable tags
« on: December 08, 2022, 02:51:12 PM »
My original cable has the translucent gray labels that had (I think)  part numbers on them. These labels also indicate where to clamp onto the brake pedal support and to indicate where the cable goes in relation to the firewall.

But I fear I have lost the label and can't read the others. I need info from anyone that has an original with the labels still intact.
From what I can remember, the label closest to the speedo head had a C7ZF number as well as vendor and date info. I wonder if the label should be Ford or FoMOCo. Some other years show the vendor "SCC" and a date on the other two labels.

There is also data that supports the idea that the outer sheath had white ink marking running along the sheath's length, but I see that on 70 cars -- not sure about 67.

Adding a pic of what it may possibly be. Does it look familiar?

Removed pic to prevent others from using a possibly erroneous label

Ok went through my pictures and its not surprising that few of the labels - printed and non-printed - last this long. This also includes any markings on the cable itself and of course using service replacements for the details is full of possible issues.

As for you drawing it does not look familiar to me but as said not much to compare it for me right now.

Looking through the pictures of both automatic and the manual transmission cars I see that there are examples and evidence from 67 production of a colored label at or near the firewall seal/grommet and one at or near the drives side frame rail inner surface where the first clamp goes. Not sure adding, at the moment, examples from cars you didn't specify (non-4 speed cars) btu I think the cable is the same in both SB and BB Mustangs and Cougars

So with that all said there are a couple of examples for you to draw from

From a 67 4 speed of one of the members here

Nice protected area that does show some writing on the cable in this location and a color label. May have indicated (ID) the application or just the positioning - that end goes to the speedo end

Don't see any more of the printing on the cable sheave but that may not have held up or maybe never there

Thanks Jeff.

To add to data and discussion I measured where the labels/tags are located.
[I'm going by the presumption that my speedo cable is original since it has the locating tags, crimp on ferrule and is black. It could have been replaced before Ford went to the gray outer sheath.

First pic is of the gray label.
I placed a tape on the very end of the interior screw fitting (which is also the end of the inner cable) and the first tag starts at 15 1/4 through 15 3/4. The next tape is at 16 5/8 through 17 1/8. Finally the last tag is at 21 through 21 1/2.
The factory installer is supposed to keep the cable between the first two tags. One will be visible in the engine compartment. The next one I believe indicates where on the side apron the cable should route to the oddball spring clamp there (there is a thread about this).

I also measured where the metal ferrule is located. I started at the built in circle flange that would be even with the extension housing on the trans when installed. The metal ferrule starts at 16 1/8 through 17.

I've also included a pic of a rubber cover toward the end of the cable.

That extra outer covering at the transmission end is interesting. Don't recall ever finding one of those on an original

Here are pics from GT350 1341 speedo cable

Edge of label in last pic was located 14.5" from the back side of the nut fitting to attach the cable to back of the speedometer.

This speedo cable also has the extra outer covering at the transmission end.

Absolutely identical to mine in all respects.
Thanks for posting. I'm going to recreate the labels since mine are too loose on the cable.
