Play in Steering Shaft '65
«

I'm getting ready to put the steering wheel back on. But first I discoveered about 1/4" of play (up and down) on the steering shaft that comes up from the gear box through the painted tube. Did I miss a spacer when I put it back together?
So the question is, what holds the shaft snug in the steering column between the steering wheel and the steering gear? TIA--

There's a conical sleeve that fits over the shaft and rides up against the collar bearing that gets put in before the long spring.

Thanks Charles. Is that part #3518 in the Osborne Chassis manual on page 44? That looked like something I didn't have!

I don't have the manuals handy, but if you see a small piece that fits between the bearing and spring, it has the be the sleeve.
