69 mustang conv heater wire grommet in firewall
« on: February 05, 2014, 03:38:38 PM »
I have been trying to find a correct replacement for the rubber grommet that hoes in the firewall that the heater wire goes through on the pass side.
I tried to remove it carefully but it was too dry and broke

Out of curiosity I took a walk in my wrecking yard. Here is the picture of a used one that I was able to remove. Nearly rock hard, It looks like a bulkhead type rubber grommet with a more rounded profile. They are not continuous, they are split as shown from new.

A picture of the one on my car covered in goop.  I am guessing they are the same grommet.  Brian

It looks like 3M Strip Caulk would be the way to go.  You can buy it in strips or rolls.  http://www.amazon.com/3M-08578-Black-Strip-Calk/dp/B000PEZ1L4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391702053&sr=8-1&keywords=3m+strip+caulk
Too much junk, too little time.

+1  Plus a shot of firewall sealant when you applying it to the rest of the firewall - at the correct locations ;)

You'll go through a fair amount of the strip chalking over time so don't worry about buying a box of the stuff - just keep the product covered since it will dry out
