Title: 67 axel seal leak
Post by: ruppstang on August 26, 2011, 11:19:26 PM
We discovered a leaking rear Axel seal on my sons 67 289 GTA before the Des Moines MCA national. I pulled it apart and discovered a poorly installed seal. I installed a new one thinking that is the end of that problem. I looked at it tonight and it is still leaking. Do I need to use some silicone around the outside of the seal? Marty

i have seen seals wear a groove into the axle. i usually put a light smear of sealer on the outer portion of the seal before installation. were the axle bearings checked too??

The seal should come with a coating that works as a sealant against the housing - agree with the previous poster, look towards axle wear. Not sure if they make one for your specific application but they use to sell a sleeve that you could place over the axle to make up for the wear or groove.

Somtimes the garter spring on the seal can pop off when driving in the seal. It will cause a leak. We always pack some heavy grease on the spring before installation to keep it in place.
