Title: 67 390 GTA - Air cleaner decals
Post by: V8_bloke_28 on September 18, 2012, 06:38:54 AM
Hi,
I purchased one of those decal kits for my 67 fastback gta 390 and haven't got any idea where the air cleaner decals go.
Ive done the engine size, autolite spark plug and front decals but don't know where the others go.
Also the one for the glove box?
Cheers

As always (if you don't include it in your original pot ;)  we're going to ask -

When and where was the car built??

Thermactor on non thermactor?  Already see that its a GT and a 390

If you purchased a kit - then you have a bunch of decals for the whole engine compartment I would guess.

If your doing those -  we already know that you will likely not be using the coil, the voltage regulator or the CAUTION FAN stickers ;)

Might as well list what was in the "kit" so we'll see what is missing and such.

If I recall correctly the kit might not include the engine ID or the air filter decals/stickers

And lastly (for this post) I'm guessing you got the red and white checkerboard engine size decal

Would suggest that you remove the FRONT sticker - never seen on on this application - original car.

I’m resurrecting an old thread that never went anywhere, but it seemed to cover what I am looking for.

Trying to determine the correct air filter decal for a 390 GTA, non-smog, late Dec 66 SJ build. I have seen what appears to be clear or blue with checkered flag, but no one seems to carry it. Of course everyone carries the orange, but have gotten the impression that is incorrect.

Any pictures or sources would be appreciated.

Never seen a "clear" cu inch decal. Only seen the blue or the orange/red checkerboard designs

No connection with this site - never used them.

What your looking for is 67 Thunderbird 390 air cleaner CU inch decal

Hope this helps

It helps a lot... thanks! That was the one I recall seeing. It seems that 80% of the pictures I see have the orange one.

Thanks again

Might be because most take the easy route. Look it up in a catalog, order a kit of what they sell and stick it on assuming someone else did their home work or they just copy what they see on the internet or magazines. And we all know where that gets you   ::)

Glad to help

Wait! So you are saying it is the 'blue' one (and not the orange one)?

Slow down :)   depends on what air cleaner the car had and where it was built. Number of threads on the subject and the type/style of air cleaner for all the different application in 67 for the S code have been a well discussed (though not always agreed to) subject for years

Good example of why not to buy the decal kits    ::) Hint - no FRONT decal originally

Hi Jeff  - thanks for the links. Now I know where I “thought” I saw a clear sticker. It was in a picture in one of those threads. Upon closer inspection, it was faded blue. Again I am looking for
non-smog, late December, SJ.

However in the third thread above, I found this picture
http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/gallery/8/6-080917180944-8659384.jpeg

Is this due to the later build date? I can’t tell on my phone, but that air cleaner maybe had the snorkel removed, and maybe a chrome base and nipple.

Is the picture just for placement of the decal? I see that decal on the raised  ring of the cover, other pictures have shown it inside of the raised ring... just curious.

After reading numerous threads and hundreds of pictures, they kind of blur together. I have no idea how you do it.

Thanks!

The two decals have a different circumference so they were placed in two different locations it appears by the workers.

The first example does appear that a PO had chromed the bottom base but the intent of the picture and focus was on the top factory lid, the style of decal and placement for that discussion and I think if fits here also.

There has been allot of discussion over the years about which air cleaners were used and installed at San Jose on 390's in 1967 and only one reference has been found which suggests that the choice was based on a trim package (GT/GTA or non GT/GTA)  but that hasn't always matched what has been found on unrestored cars over the years so we've kind of left it there since earlier discussions appeared to hit a wall until we find a bunch of new unrestored examples

So that is one detail you left out of your description of your car. Is it a GT/GTA or not?

I’m going for GTA clone at this point. Car was originally a non-GT with smog per Marti report.

Taking the discussion with Bill elsewhere so that we don't side track the thread ;)

Can I ask what the ultimate decision was on the decal placement? I have a 390 GTA built at SJ in September of '66.  Its nowhere near 100% correct but I would like to get it right now that I have the proper decal.  I'm looking forward to dropping some knowledge on someone as soon as they point out the decal is blue instead of orange.  ;D
