Title: '68 rear tail panel to body and taillight housing to panel screws
Post by: Oz390 on March 09, 2013, 01:18:51 AM
Shelby sketch/assembly book calls out 55962-S9, an oval head screw to attach fiberglass panel to the body. (#8-18, 5/16" OD, 3/4"L).  AMK provides a drill tip truss head (similar to the carpet screws, but a slightly flatter head, but not fully flat), I think it is 380660, #8-18, 1/2"OD, 1/2"L. S2 finish.

My Cal Special uses a different one (which would not be surprising at they were done by Ford not Shelby).

What is correct for attaching the fiberglass panel to the body for a '68 Shelby?

Part 2, I think a 52608-S40 is correct to attach the taillight buckets to the fiberglass panel.  Filister head, AB (finer thread), #12-14, 11/32" OD, 1/2"L.  Correct?

Just in case there is a difference - what car # or time period (month of assembly) ?

Not an original, doing an EXP500 replica and trying to stay "close".  Have to buy nuts and bolts so figure I'll buy close to what was used on the real deals.

So whatever Shelby would have been using on the early 68's would be acceptable to me...

Here you go - BTW these are the same as I've found on just about all the Cal Specials - at least the head design- including mine that was had original paint before I tapped it in the rear :(    May 15 built car

Interesting, my GT/CS has pan heads.... April 29.  One owner car and apparently original, but who knows, long time since the factory... it had been resprayed, but a "mask and do it all" job... that left overspray on many of them...

I pulled the panel and did a quick rattle-can touchup a while ago, thus the radically different paint.

Thanks.

Have seen those also on a few - just don't know those cars well enough to know if they are original

68 Shelbys used screws like Jeff's pic. They can be either phosphate or clear zinc although the majority are phoshate. The AMK ones are close
