Driveshaft Markings - 67 390 w/C6
« on: August 09, 2015, 02:23:25 AM »
Hi. I'm trying to find the colour/amount the stripes should be on my driveshaft.
The car is a San Jose June 67 built gta mustang fastback. C6 auto with 390 v8.
Car has ps and ac with 3:00 conventional diff. I haven't got a build sheet and I can't find anything that matches my car. All I know is it should be bare metal.
Cheers

Unfortunately 67 buildsheets didn't show driveshaft markings - that started in 68 :(

Believe they might be the same as 67 GT500 with an automatic

Will try and confirm and post

So that you understand the logic I'm trying to apply here I offer the following

- I have pictures of original GT500 automatic drivelines

- Don't have any information on buildsheets for this detail

- Have no original 67 390 automatic drivelines to show at the moment

- On paper 67 GT500 with automatics were ordered as 390 fastbacks with certain parts replaced/substitued on paper so that they would get the final product they were wanting. If the part is not listed on one of these lists it can be assumed that the part was not replaced and the piece is the same as used on the 67 390 car. Looking at the Shelby add delete I could find none of the automatic car orders showing that the driveline was replaced as it was listed for 4 speed cars. It was the same piece yet the markings were different. Those were assembled (like all Mustangs) at another plant and arrived ready to install as a unit

So following that I offer the following as found on 67 GT500's with automatic. My best guess at this point. Of course you can choose to hold off until you have more information. You should not (if shown in a Concours Restored class) loss any points for not having the marks and they are very easy to add later

Stripes from front to rear normally

True Red - Medium Blue - Strong White

Hope this helps

Here's what I found on my San Jose '67 390 C6.  The only caveat is that my car was built in September 1966, so things could have changed by June 1967...

Nice graphic :)

Looks like yours are in reverse to the ones I have - not that unusual or sometimes they get reinstalled (after replacing the U joints) backwards at some point.

Can confirm that the three identification stripes continued through approx Mid Feb 67

The one I have pictures of had a sea foam green and another inspector or makers mark/stripe at each end - unrelated to the identification stripes

Thanks Jeff!

Here are some additional documentation photos of the original drive shaft from my car.
And yes, there was a sea foam green inspectors mark on the differential end of mine too (see the last photo)...

On my example the sea foam was a stripe around the driveline - the rear yoke had a different colored swipe
