5/65 Dearborn Extractor Vent Colors
« on: October 18, 2022, 03:21:00 PM »
The car in question here is my 5/18/65 5F09A728xxx 2+2
There was another topic just like this for the SJ cars, so here are the Dearborn details.

Note I did not include a breakdown of the fasteners but may do so when I get to that part of the restoration.
Although this is a modified car, I only picture here parts that are and will stay concours.
To my knowledge this extractor has never been apart. The parts were cleaned but that's it.

First pic is of the major pieces less the outside cast body which is at the painters. The paint is semi-gloss black, albeit on the dull side.

Second pic is of the shields, top view.

Third of the shields, bottom.

Fourth is of the aluminum diecast vents, top view.
Fifth is of the bottom.

Sixth is the largest of the extractors.
All of the screens are bare and unpainted, natural aluminum mesh.

Seventh is the rear showing how the screens were attached.

Eighth is a view of the painted areas within the chrome.

To repaint the grill areas proved to be tough. It took a while to figure out how to mask these. But I can do a large one in 30 minutes now.
Tape is 1/8 Scotch fine line masking tape, but not the vinyl stuff.

On the version with swaged-in screen I carefully pulled the screen out of the recess on one side, pulled it back from the cast piece and taped it. After painting I straightened out any bent parts and pushed the screen back into the recess.

I used SEM Trim Black to paint the inside of the vent.
