Window Mechanism Lubrication

I just removed one of the rear window mechanisms from my 64.5 convertible.  It appears they originally used some type of grease that over the past 60 years has dried up pretty solid.  I am cleaning things up and want to relubricate the sliders and mechanism.  Is there a preferred lubricant to use for this?  Do folks still use grease and if so what type.  Or do folks use some kind of lubricating spray like silicone?

I use spray lube in a can, either white lithium or motorcycle chain lube.

I use Sil Glyde lubrication.

The factory used white lithium grease. I do too.

It wasn't the stuff like in a spray can these days, originally thick brush on.  I have some and have used it mostly in the past.

Thank you all for the suggestions.  It is very helpful. 

Seeing how hard and crusty the original lithium grease got after 60 years I was just wondering if it is still the best choice.  I am sure Ford was not designing the cars to last 60 years.  Then again in 60 more years I won't really care what the grease looks like.

I'm sure either will work fine.  Here's the thicker white lithium grease I use, it's the off-white/cream color like original, comes in a black tube: 


-Ultra lube 4x white lithium grease


I squeeze it out into a cup and use a brush to apply... same with sil-glyde.

I do like Charles says. I squeeze the lithium grease out into a container. Then I use an acid brush to apply it where it is needed.

I use lithium grease from a can. To apply it, I use a "Popsicle stick" applicator (or a 16d nail, or chunk of wood). That's been the method(s) I've used for decades. The used "stick" goes back in the can and the cover goes back on. The can sits on a shelf on a paper towel now (I used to use a chunk of cardboard). Basics.

For the glass runs (for the rollers) I've always used stick lubricant. Use to be some a latch lube back when we were doing Model As and other early Fords.


Since that has sort of gone away I use saw lube. Basically the same metal tube with the stick of a wax based material you can find at many hardware stores
