Title: Trunk area - screw and stud protectors
Post by: carguy on June 09, 2010, 07:22:50 PM
I am trying to find the gray rubber or plastic protectors that go over the tail light bolts in the trunk of my 70 Boss 302.  Can anyone give me an idea where I can find them?  I have not been able to locate in the catalogues of the major suppliers.

Thanks

Have you check with AMK?  www.amkproducts.com

If the  '70 ones are the same as the '67/'68 ones.. I think NPD and Virginia Mustang have them.  They are gray and kind of "bullet" shaped.

NPD gatalog in the taillight section. page 161 for the 67/68 the part # is 13434-3k5. 69/70 listed under part# 375574-SA

Thank you so much for the great advice.  Virginia Mustangs said they did not carry it.  I could not find the protectors at AMK.  I would never have thought to look under 67/68.  Will order tomorrow.

Thanks for solving the mystery!

Are you looking for the covers for the bolt/mounting shafts of the covers for the screws in the taillights (as well as the upper trim in the trunk)?

Very different

Jeff:

Thanks so much.  I am looking for the covers for the bolt/mounting shafts of the tail lights.  The ones that I have seen are gray and much larger than the covers  for the screws in the taillights (as well as the upper trim in the trunk)

I am still not quite sure where to find these.

Ok lets start where we always should - What plant and when was the car built?

Started looking through my pictures and I'm not finding gray covers for the mounting shafts at Dearborn so far - will look further

Plastic covers were also used to cover the marker light shafts as well. I have seen these on many FORD'S and used to take them off of cars in the junk yards years ago. If you have any yards in your area that will let you walk around and deal in older cars you may find what you need. I would check out all late 60's-to early 70s FORDS.

Have plenty of the domed gray ones - just trying to figure out if they are correct for his car - his plant

On a 1970 Mach 1 Metuchen built 12-12-69 were the grey rubber caps used on the side marker lights & the studs that hold the tail lamp in?

Thanks,
Don

Here are some shots of original 70 NJ and the stud covers on the taillight covers. I have Dearborn examples with the same and with smaller rubber covers for the ends of the screws that are located between the studs. Believe its a good chance that NJ installed those also

You can see that one has a very thin rubber form while the other is allot thicker- not sure why. Thinner walled ones are what I've seen used at other plants. The thicker ones may be from a less used supplier as they appear to be similar to screw covers used in other years in the engine compartment and for unused vacuum nipples

Uncertain of the specific NJ VIN on this one

A little hard to see in this pic but the gray 'bullet' cap can be found on the side marker lamp studs and on the 'tail light lens to bucket' sheet metal screw. The SM screws are very pointed and sharp - these plastic protectors twist on over the exposed thread to save one's hands from getting cut up.

Thanks Rick for the additional examples - it appears we may have discovered another difference in practices and suppliers between the plants again.
