Title: 1966 spinner hubcap screw size
Post by: Hipo giddyup on November 19, 2017, 12:21:55 PM
I‘ve looked through Jim’s hardware spreadsheets but cannot find the screw size or replacement for the screws used to hold the die cast spinner center on the 66’ style hubcaps. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

I have a set of these hubcaps laying about.

5/16 hex head with straight slot
Head surface is recessed (slight lip around outside edge)
Built in star washer
Total length .6165
Thread length .445
Self tap with slot
10-24 thread
Looks like zinc coating

The best reason I can come up with about not knowing about the spinner screw is that Ford supplied the wheel cover and spinner complete and did not service them separately. This "quirk" is shown in other items with the notation "includes attaching hardware". The only hardware mentioned in the 75 MPC is for Shelbys.
If someone with original wheel covers with spinners for a 66 could remove one and measure it, that would be a help. This would only apply to 66 as I would suspect that suppliers used their own type of hardware.
(In the interim, I would recommend you getting a set of 66 Style Steel Wheels (include one for the spare) for your car. They look better anyway.  ;) And they do include the small center cap and attaching hardware. )

That's the type of description that is constructive. Good write-up (I wish others would follow). Unfortunately, I couldn't find a corresponding screw in available documentation (AMK or Osborn publications) to get a Ford part number.

I was using your format (off the top of my head) from your excellent Excel spreadsheets!

I had my laptop in the shop hooked to an HD TV and was showing a buddy a side by side of your spreadsheet, the description of each fastener, and a blowup of a section of the Mustang Part and Body Illustrations (digital edition) and he just looked at me with a puzzled expression and exclaimed "I've seen you geek out before, but this is just crazy good."
Having this level of detail in the shop on a big screen at 1080 is just an amazing resource. Especially if you are tired of reading small print in books.

Thanks for your spreadsheet and all the work that went into it.

By the way, I was using a digital caliper and got carried away with number of decimals. I can't REALLY measure to the 10 thousandths.

I spent many years in military Logistics at Ford (Aerospace) establishing "precedence" on how to write descriptions (we used Mil Handbook H4) and that experience was carried on to planning and scheduling.
"I've seen you geek out before, but this is just crazy good."
I was also know as "Mr. Volkswagen" because I did a bit of dirt track and off road racing in VWs. Not a geek in sight there.
By the way, I was using a digital caliper and got carried away with number of decimals. I can't REALLY measure to the 10 thousandths.
I put my digital calipers back in the box, put them on a shelf and went back to my 65 year old dial calipers. Did you know they don't need batteries?
All this started when I went to one of the local Mustang stores (there used to be 8 or 9 locally, we got one now) and asked for a bolt that hold the clutch spring retainer bracket to the brake pedal support on a 66 Mustang. The guy behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. So I started to do some research on the topic - the Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet was the result. That was 1974.
Enjoy the fruits of my labors.
The bolt is 43490-S8, and you need three.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful!! And I am actually running a set of Styled steel wheels on my 66' coupe (and I have a spare in the trunk). ;)  Wouldn't have it any other way.

I picked up a set of 4 66' spinners locally for a very reasonable price. I had two that were missing two screws each. I cleaned up the hubcaps but the OCD in me, I couldn't put them away without all the screws. ;D   Thanks again.

Did you determine the dimensions of the existing screws? That would help a lot.

They are 10-24 self tapping. I found these at the local hardware store, just that they do not have the slotted head. They were a quick and easy fix until I can scavenge some from other donors hubcaps. I was fine with using the hardware store screws as these hubcaps are nice driver quality , not show quality.
