Forgot to mention that our registration form just appeared in the current issue of Mustang Times, however, there is an address problem.  If you are mailing a registration using the form in the magazine, please note that the correct P.O. Box is 8412, not 8142.  You also can register online through our website or Motosho.

I just got my registration returned due to wrong address.  Unfortunately, there is no way to notify everyone who downloaded the wrong information.  I think the club needs to make an extra effort to contact those who might attend. Maybe send an email to all the area regional clubs of the update.

FYI, rumor has it that the hotel only has 7 rooms left.

That correction was made more than a month ago on our website, the MCA website forum, and several other forums.  It also has been corrected in the latest issue of Mustang Times.  Online registration through Motosho also has been active for a month now.

The roomblock is almost sold out even after increasing it last month, but the hotel is not sold out.  However, our rate is $80 less than the regular rate.  I contacted our coordinator at the hotel about increasing the block size again and she was going to see what could be done.  I also will be calling her tomorrow.

If the roomblock cannot be increased again, I will post information about other hotels in the area, mainly near the airport.

I just heard from the hotel that they will not increase the roomblock size again.  Rooms are available at the regular rate, which is $179.  I will post information on other hotels near the airport that are better priced.  It's about a 10-mile drive from the airport area to the show site, but there is nothing closer.

How many cars have already registered for the show?  I am debating if I should bring one or two cars plus I will be there judging.

We have 36 on Motosho, but I won't know the number of mailed in registrations until our club meeting Wednesday night. It was slow over the holidays, but now we're going up two to three cars a day on Motosho.  Registration is open until March 6th.  With the hotel sold out, we are anticipating a good turnout.  Got a call from the Alamogordo Club yesterday--they're bringing 15 cars and I don't believe any are registered yet.  Heck, I'm not even registered yet!  :)

Thats a good point since I have not registered a car for the show yet either.

My main problem is I only have a single car trailer now....would need a larger trailer to bring both.  I will work on something.

That's my problem, too.  Two cars and a one-car trailer.

Actually, I have a third Mustang, but it's not show worthy right now.

Donald Farr just let me know that he called Casino Del Sol and they gave him rooms at the $99 rate.  Maybe they have a few rooms left and maybe they added a few even after telling me they wouldn't.  I recommend calling them before you book elsewhere.

Two Announcements:

First:  Thanks to a ballroom booking error by our host hotel, we need to make a scheduling change. Our Friday night pool party will now be on Saturday, and our Saturday night banquet will be on Friday. Everything else remains the same.

If you have registered for either event and for some reason the scheduling change means you cannot attend the banquet or pool party, please contact us and we will refund your payment.  We do need the request no later than one week before the event because of the food orders.

Second: We now have a block of rooms for Thursday through Sunday at the Hilton Garden Inn Tucson Airport. The rate is $99.00 a night, and they provide a free shuttle to the show site. The group name for the reservations is "Spirit of the Sun." The phone number is (520) 741-0505.  The booking code is SSNS.

Thanks, we were scrambling this week when we found out that they hadn't held our ballroom and had booked a 500-guest quincineara in there.  They offered to hold our banquet outside in a tent.  So, we just switched nights and got some benefits for that.

Forgot to mention, if you didn't get a room at Casino Del Sol and previously booked the Hilton Garden Inn, call in and get switched into our new roomblock there.

Post the map of the show site here like you did on the MCA page.  Also, Matt and I will have a rental car if anyone needs to park their trailer and needs a ride to hotel registration.

It's not that far a walk from the trailer parking to the hotel, but when you go to check in, you can park in those lots just west of the show area on the map.  And, really, if there aren't any trailers in the drivethrough, you could just pull in there.  We just don't want a trailer logjam in there.

Oh, and so you know, the area just below the show area is Ava Amphitheater and there will be restrooms available there.

Yes, it's not too bad.  I have so much to unload, however, I'm going to park in the trailer lot, unhook the trailer, and drive up there otherwise I would be there for an hour.  LOL

Do we have an idea how people have registered for the show at this point so far?
Title: Re: Spirit of the Sun National Show, Tucson, Arizona
Post by: Laurie S. on March 01, 2015, 08:17:30 PM
We're at approximately 130 cars right now.  The deadline is March 6th for judged entries, but I'm going to ask for that to be extended to March 15th.  We've been hearing from several clubs in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas that they want to have their March club meeting before registering.  They, like my club, all meet the second week of the month.

Displays can enter up to, and including, the days of the show.  We expect the number of those entries to increase, also.
Title: Re: Spirit of the Sun National Show, Tucson, Arizona
Post by: Laurie S. on March 07, 2015, 08:31:31 PM
The deadline for pre-registration for JUDGED ENTRIES has been extended to midnight on Friday, March 13th. You can register online via Motosho until that time. If you want to mail your entry, than we must have it in hand by that Friday, not postmarked by Friday.

If you mail it, please first fax a copy to (520) 620-1432 or e-mail a scan of it to aztlan@theriver.com and then put it in the mail with your check.

This deadline does not apply to DISPLAY ENTRIES, which can be accepted up to, and including, March 28th.

Come out and enjoy the fun at our show!

I have a second car I could bring if someone has extra room in a trailer to take a car from Phoenix to Tucson.  Concours trailered 1969 CobraJet convertible.  My trailer only has room for one car, and already bringing one.

How many cars were you anticipating? 3 to 4 hundred? I must admit the reason I decided not to attend was that around a month ago when I started to sign up there were no rooms available at the host facility. I did not want to be at a remote location. I was disappointed that more rooms were not blocked/held for this event. I normally bring my rig with 2 cars. My fault for not signing up earlier, but seems like not enough rooms were blocked. Hope everyone has a great show.
Title: Re: Spirit of the Sun National Show, Tucson, Arizona

We were anticipating between 200 and 300 based on other shows, but not being in the summer does reduce the numbers that attend.  We still expect to have about 200 cars with the local display entries that are coming in.

We reserved more than half of the hotel.  The original block sold out in November.  We were able to increase it by 40 rooms in December and it booked almost overnight.  I would have loved to have booked the entire hotel but you have to understand how hotel contracts work.  With the original almost 300 room nights booked we were obligated to the hotel for $26,000+ if it didn't book.  The deposit was based on that amount, which meant we had to pay the hotel $5,000 more than a year before the show.  Fortunately, MCA loaned us the money because we sure didn't have it at that time.  If we had blocked the whole hotel (and they never would have let us), we would have had to come up with probably $10,000 for a deposit.  This is not an unusual situation by any means.

All National and Grand National hotels book up very quickly.  This is normal.  What is harder for our show is that there are no other hotels nearby.  The closest are at the airport, which is about 9 miles away.  I've stayed that far at a number of shows, including the host hotel so it really isn't that big a deal.

If you wait until the month before a show to book the host hotel, you will not be getting in anywhere.

I won't go into my background here, but I fully understand how hotel contract room blocks for events work and they do vary from one venue to another. I attempted to book a room two months prior to the event in January and no rooms were available at the group rate. I can't speak for anyone other than myself but that is the reason I chose not to attend.

All I can say to that response is Wow. Glad to know that to you it is not a big deal. Staying 9 miles away from the event and dependent on a shuttle is not my idea of fun.
Did you go to Disney? Just the shuttle back and forth from the show site to the parking was a disaster.
After attending over 12 MCA National/Grand Nationals in the last 5 years, including all 3 last year, I've learned that some are fun and well prepared and some are not.

It wasn't a month - it was 2 months prior to the event.

Not a true statement - plenty of well prepared great events out there.
As previously stated I still hope you have a good show.

Two months before January would be November.  We had rooms available in our block until around December 20th so I don't know why you couldn't book a room.  I'm sorry it happened because we would have liked to have you attend the show, but the block wasn't filled until late December.  The hotel actually had rooms available until last week, but not at our show rate.

Thanks Laurie,
The event is March 27-29 so 2 month prior to the event would be January. I attempted to book a room somewhere around the week of January 20-23 - therefore: "two months prior to the event in January" . So 2 months prior to the event. Sorry for any confusion.  Have fun. I'm booked for Columbus.

Be sure to bring a good sunscreen and a hat. Weather for Friday through Sunday currently is predicted to be 86 to 87 degrees with full sun. Between the sun, asphalt, and shiny paint on the cars, many sunburns are predicted for those who aren't careful.   8)

I will be looking around later this week, as the NCRS (Corvettes) has their Regional in Tucson near the airport at some indoor arena.  My '64 is going for the Duntov Award,  so I need to pass the critical and very tough Performance Verification test I have failed twice before.  Hope the weather is good this weekend, even though we will be indoors, want to see lots of Tucson I missed the last MCA Regional.  Maybe I will try out the casino at the resort, it is not too far from the airport area, right?
