dual point distributor
« on: February 19, 2021, 08:46:41 PM »
I just picked up a D0OF-12127-V distributor for my 70 M code Cleveland/wide ratio 4sp. This distributor has dual points. Were all distributors capable of being dual point or was there something special about the mounting plate that made them dual point? What would the application be for the dual points in 1970? Car was built 1/28/70

Believe mounting plate is different on a dual point verses the single point. Kits and plates were available over the counter for decades to convert distributors

70's Mustangs are not my field of interest and my knowledge limited but aren't the 70 dual point distributors vacuum advance whereas the early dual point distributors and the conversion kits sold over the counter for mechanical advance ? 70's are fewer and rarer aren't they?

You may be right - I may be thinking of the earlier versions as far as being rarer that may just be due to selling less cars. There were dual point 71 and 72 applications also with the vacuum advance on a number of Mustangs

As far as application, I meant for the dual point distributor for the 351c. I guess when Tim O'Connor comes back he can guide me whether to go back dual point or single. I saw a post of his in Dec.2020 saying he was going to do some limited rebuilds. I found his website but it says he's closed.

This was originally a single point / dual vacuum advance / vacuum retard distributor. So someone has converted it to dual points back in the day or at some point prior to your ownership. There's no real advantage to the dual point setup if the car has mufflers and is relatively stock. It's just more expensive come tune up time.

In looking at the 1965-72 MPC, as noted above, the Distributor you note should be a Single Point Distributor, for Fairlanes and Mustangs with ST,v Carb, and Imco Emision System. There is no Dual Point Distributor Shown for 1970, 351's.
For 1971, the Dual Point Distributor is shown for Mustangs with 351 Cobra Jet, ST and AT, with 4v (Marked D1ZF-12127-BA, Part # D1ZZ-12127-B or E), for Boss 351 with ST and 4v (Marked D1ZF-12127-DA, Part # D1ZZ-12127-D), and for 351 Mustang with ST and 4v (Marked D1ZF-12127-EA, Part # D1ZZ-12127-E).

Hope this helps.
