Upholstery Paper Wrapped Wire
« on: October 29, 2021, 01:16:48 AM »
I am now in the process of restoring the upholstery in my Dearborn, Aug 12th, 1966 mustang fastback hipo GT. Need some help from those on the forum who have already done this process. I have bead blasted, primed and painted all of my frames. I have new TMI pony interior upholstery, American Cushion Industries seat foam, burlap, frame edge padding and the listing rods from NPD. The parts that I don't have new are the paper wrapped wires that connects the springs together. I would like to add new one to my bucket seats. But I have not found them listed for sale in any of the Mustang vendor catalogs. I found the paper wrapped wire on line, the stuff I found is 16-gauge wire while the stuff in my bucket seats is more like 12 gauge. The wire is tempered and has spring memory not like ordinary wire that bends and stays bent. Where can I find the correct paper wrapped 12-gauge wire. Thanks for the help.

Like many parts some just are not available new or in some cases such as upholstery related items very difficult to find in NOS form. In some cases parts were not even produced as service replacements. Because of this you have to get creative or find nice originals to restore and use.

I want to share with others on the forum what I came up with to solve my problem. I kept searching on the internet and finally found what I was looking for under the search of "Spring Wire". I found the paper wrapped 12-gauge wire used in the construction of the 1965-66 mustang bucket seats from an upholstery supplier - J & L Fabrics, Inc., 4808 Lamm Rd., Wilson, NC 27893, 800-262-5790 or 252-237-2294. They sell the 12 gauge "Spring Stake Wire" for $2.29/Yard. I purchased a wire bender for about $8 on eBay and used my old examples as patterns to duplicate new ones. I attached a couple of pics to show my results. Hope this will help the next mustanger that is looking to replace their bucket seats old rusty wires when they do their seat upholstery.

You were looking at car catalogs.
Search upholstery catalogs using terms like "upholstery paper covered wire."
