What's the best way to remove sound deadener/undercoating from the front frame rail without damaging anything underneath it?  Curious to see if anything lies underneath like the rotation number, etc...

Any chemical you use will remove anything underneath.  Your best chance might be a heat gun and putty knife.

I have used gasoline, a rag, and elbow grease to remove undercoating.  It works quite well and does not remove most automotive paints.

Of course, one has to apply common sense and do this in a well-ventilated area.

diesel fuel also works. not as flammable either.

Diesel fuel will work too, but it tends to leave a greasy film afterwords.  Gasoline is also a bit cheaper!

Would not expect to find any markings  (though it you discover something lets see   on the front frame rails unless its a San Jose built car or around the steering box bolt location

It is a San Jose car, so I have my optimism since I saw one this weekend (66 coupe) that had the number written on it.  Thread is located in the 64-66 section.

Should have the fender locator numbers written there  - same set of numbers that were used over and over on thousands of Mustangs. Just not always the same numbers
