64.5 Dearborn Wheel Housing Paint Steps

Would the inside rear wheel housing be painted the same color as the undercarriage before applying the sound deadener?

I'm uncertain (have not stripped through each layer of paint and coating on a car from Dearborn from that period)  on your particular period. In general (most years sound deadener was applied after the red oxide coat in the rear wheelwells. then would get some coating from the gray exterior filler primer coat. This all would then be covered by body color (the vast majority of the surface in the rear wheelwell and exposed frame rail in the opening.

So the primer over or under the sound deadener is not so visible on the finished product

Jeff,are you saying that under the early car the underside was red oxide and the body was gray sealer?

Depends - what year (month) and plant are you asking about. Makes all the difference ;)

Never had one to strip down to the metal (to determine if sound deadener is over or under primer). But the final results are the same as the other plants - exterior color

A lot of times, I have seen sound deadener applied directly to bare metal.  Probably one of the reasons the cars had such bad rust problems in wet/salty environments.

There was a period of time where that was the practice at San Jose (early) then they changed later in 65 production to primer first.

Interesting topic, I stripped back the sound deadener many moons ago on my early 64.5 (march), I still may have a little bit to take off tucked up right under the lip so I'll pay attention to see if any I can make out what went on when, this project has started and stalled a number of times over the last 15 years, I'm trying to get it up and running again...
