Title: Engine Compartment Paint - Where does it stop above the pinch weld?
Post by: Bongoman on April 17, 2010, 03:39:13 AM
Jeff:

I read the 69-70 FAQ's and saw your mention of the engine compartment paint above the pinch weld but I'm still a bit confused. Are you saying in late 69 and throughout 70, the engine compartment paint usually went above the pinch weld?

If the engine compartment paint went above the pinch weld (in particular for a 1/70 San Jose car) where did it stop?  At the seam for the upper cowl panel?

Thanks.

All the 69's I have seen that are original the engine compartment black is below the cowl pinch weld and the 70's are above and when the cowl panel is installed and you open the hood no body color shows. I never seen any mask off lines visible and I believe it was just faded into the cowl vs. taped off. I am also sure there are several exceptions both ways as it was a matter of a pass of the spray gun.

+1 on Jeff's post.  This black out procedure is a later 69 production change. It was not strictly seen on 70 only's . Bob

For your San Jose 70 car the black was extended from the firewall all the way to the base of the windshield opening. This staved a step (early 69's being painted black below the pinchweld and then again at the base of the windshield to black out the defroster and pad pad edge)

Also helped out black out the cowl area for the mach I's

On my 69 DEARBORN MACH 1 (OCT. 68) There was no black paint on the cowl at all even around the lower windshield pinch weld around the defroster. The car had all original paint in that area. Again a hit and miss thing I am sure.
