Title: 1965 Convertible Top Wiring
Post by: trudera on September 18, 2010, 04:11:25 PM
Does Anyone have any pictures as to where the wire to the solenoid goes through the firewall? I need to drill the hole as the new firewall does not have any dimples. Secondly, does anyone have a picture of where the red and yellow top motor wiring goes from the door post back? When I bought the car it was run up the tunnel.

Thanks,

Randy

Here's a pic of my 66 firewall. Not the best picture but the arrow is pointing to the wire with grommet where it comes through the firewall. Its the same for the 65. You should already have a dimple in the firewall for locating the hole, you can drill or punch it out to a 1/2". I have other pictures for the interior where my wire runs down the drivers side to the pump but don't know if thats the same for a 65. Let me know if you need me to post them.

There are 2 routings of the wiring at the rear of the car in '65.  Not sure when it was changed.  The wiring schematic in the Osborn assembly manual is the later.  The Feb '65 SJ car I did had the early-style routing.

Early style cuts over the wheel well before the felt pad on the flat spot.  Later style goes back and over by the trunk lid hinge.

Thanks Folks, This is a great start. My car is a late Dearborn car if this helps. I have the Osborne book but it is hard to follow, actual pictures would be appreciated.

If it's a late '65 Dearborn, the schematic in the assembly manual should be how yours would have routed.

I don't have the assembly manual so does that mean for him the drivers side? if so I can post pictures.

All 65 top wiring routed on the passenger side.

"All 65 top wiring routed on the passenger side."   I agree!

It is 1966 that is weird.  In 1966, Dearborn and Metuchen re-routed the convertible top wiring to the Driver's side, Yet San Jose still left it on the passenger side in '66 !!

I've never seen a '66 San Jose car with Driver's side convertible top wiring. Yet, You will find '66 Dearborn and Metuchen cars with the wiring that way.

My theory (and it is my theory, lol).. is that Ford shipped all the rest of their passenger side wiring destined for the other two plants to the San Jose plant after the re-design.  It's a bizarre mystery like everything else.  Then again, the San Jose plant always liked to do things different...kind of like a red headed step child..lol..

I can attest to Tony's statement regarding Metuchen convertible's. My May/June Sprint has the top wiring run up the driver's side.
